Idaho Wedding Crasher Parties with Newlyweds, Steals Gifts

By J. Gelband, 10-03-07

Wedding crashers were funny in the movie with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. But in real life, wedding crashers stink. Just ask new bride and groom Sciara and Charles Dougherty, a Rigby couple who were victims of a hard-partying and thieving wedding crasher.

The female wedding crasher acted like a regular party guest at the Sept. 15 fete, dancing and dining and celebrating. It wasn’t until later, when the couple realized gifts, gift cards and cash were missing, that they suspected the stranger with a daughter was, in fact, a crasher and the thief.

The next day, authorities identified the culprit as Kimberly Cooper while she was cashing in the stolen gift cards at a Target in nearby Ammon.

“She acted like she fit in with everybody, introduced herself to some of our family members, helped decorate the car, helped herself to the wedding cake before we cut it ourselves,” groom Charles Dougherty told KTVB news

The crazy part? This wasn’t Cooper’s only score that day. She and her accomplice daughter had already hit up a wedding in Idaho Falls earlier the same day and had stolen gift cards from the first party as well.

The first of the victimized newlyweds busted Cooper the day after the wedding at Target and confronted her. “We had some gift cards stolen last night and we don’t know who took them, but we thought it was just kinda strange that you were at our reception last night, uninvited, not knowing who you were,” Josh Van Tress told KPVI news of addressing Cooper. “And she just looked at me and said, ‘Uh, what do you think I do, go around to receptions and steal gift cards and money?’”

Cooper is charged with burglary.
