Lineage Dance Offers Classes and Performs this Weekend in Missoula
By Brianna Randall, 4-03-07
Lineage Dance, a professional contemporary dance troupe from Los Angeles, will be returning to Missoula this Thursday to offer a whirlwind fare of classes, performances, and feel-good community outreach.
Unlike most dance troupes, Lineage donates all profits from their concerts to local nonprofit and community groups. Created by Hilary Thomas in 1999, they’ve raised money for organizations nation-wide, and perform with the goal of making the arts accessible to all demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. During their last visit to Missoula in July 2006, Lineage Dance performed the beautifully choreographed and emotionally charged “Healing Blue: Dancing for a Cure” as a benefit for the Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program.
This year, the Missoula International School (MIS) is hosting Lineage’s visit, and any proceeds from Saturday’s performance at MCT will be donated directly to the MIS art program. Lineage will also perform an assembly for MIS students, faculty and parents, as well as offer dance classes to the public.
“Arts, and especially dance, is very important to our overall academic program,” says Marta Pierpoint, Director of Advancement at MIS.
Saturday’s multi-media performance of Lineage’s “Dancing Through the Ages” will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Missoula Children’s Theater. It won’t be your typical modern dance recital, though—“Dancing Through the Ages” is the compilation of a large-scale community outreach program in southern California, which taught the “universal language of dance” to participants aged 2 to 82 years-old. Expect to see plenty of awesome dance choreography onstage, but also an intriguing blend of video and still images of non-dancers moving with grace and joy through all the ages and stages of life.
Lineage’s dance classes will be held at MIS on Thursday and Friday, April 5 and 6, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. These classes are open to the public, and available for all ranges of ability levels, ages 7 and up. Cost is $35 for the two day workshop or $20 if attending one master class. To add a little incentive for taking these classes, Lineage will design a performance piece with all participants from the two-day workshop, who will then perform as the prelude to the group’s “Dancing Through the Ages” at MCT on Saturday.
“MIS students perform quite frequently at community events. This is a wonderful opportunity for them—and for the community—to perform with and watch a highly professional dance troupe,” says Pierpoint.
Anyone participating in the prelude piece may watch the show for free of charge. For non-performers, tickets to Saturday’s performance are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.
