Lynn Rossetto Kasper Visits Boulder & Desert Writing Award Announced

The Boulder Farmer’s Market will open for its first Wednesday afternoon of the season today, kicking off with a book signing and talk by Lynn Rossetto Kasper, host of NPR’s The Splendid Table. She’ll be discussing her new book, How to Eat Supper. (Free, 5:30-6:30 p.m.)
The Bluff, Utah-based Ellen Meloy Fund for Desert Writers announced that this year’s winner of their annual award is Joe Wilkins. Wilkins plans to study and write about the eastern front of the Rocky Mountains from Texas to Montana.
Wilkins describes the area in this way:
“Not as striking and strange as the high country and deserts of Arizona and Utah; sparsely settled and isolated from the influence of most major cities; home to a people mostly poor and still clinging to an outdated agriculture—the eastern front is a forgotten region of the American West. Similarly, the contemporary literature of the Great American Desert is as sparse as the good rivers that cut that dry country.”
The University of Oklahoma Press recently published Margot Kahn’s Horses That Buck: The Story of Champion Bronc Rider Bill Smith, which tells the story of Bill Smith, a Wyoming-raised cowboy who became a “three-time world champion saddle bronc rider.” Kahn will be touring the region in the coming weeks, appearing at Shakespeare & Company in Missoula (May 14, 7 p.m.), Borders in Bozeman (May 15, 7 p.m.), White Horse in Thermopolis, WY (May 16, 2 p.m.), The Readers Cove in Fort Collins (12-3 p.m.), and Anthology Book Co. in Loveland, CO (May 19, 6 p.m.)
WyoFile.com, a website covering “Wyoming Politics and Policy,” is featuring an excerpt from Alexandra Fuller’s new book, The Legend of Colton H. Bryant.
