The Missoula Art Museum is showcasing the work of Marie Watt through June 27 at the Lynda M. Frost Contemporary American Indian Art Gallery.

Watt’s site-specific installation Heirloom is the final commission from MAM’s Andy Warhol Foundation’s New Spaces/New Visions Series. Watt was an artist-in-residence at MAM from March 13-21 during the process of installation.

From the museum:

Watt is interested in the human stories and rituals implicit in commonplace objects. In this project she explores the notion of heirlooms. In a strict sense, an heirloom is an object made valuable by family custom; an object passed down from generation to generation. While some heirlooms have monetary value, in many cases their true richness is in an associated story, history or knowledge shared from one generation to the next. Heirloom invites participation by the Missoula community and explores the questions: What is the most important thing you have been given? What do we keep? What do we pass on? When are heirlooms burdens rather than blessings? What are the heirlooms in our lives that require the custodianship of community?
