But no new jobs

Micron Will Build New Plant in Boise

By Jill Kuraitis, 3-03-08

Boise’s NBC affiliate KTVB reported Monday that Boise’s Micron Technology and Taiwan’s Nanya Technology will invest jointly in a new chip manufacturing plant.  The Idaho Statesman reported the plant will be in Boise.

“Partnering with Nanya would be significant to Micron as we continue to drive toward the most cost-effective ways to grow and innovate,” Micron COO Mark Durcan said in a prepared statement. “Nanya has proven its capabilities to be a leader in manufacturing technology and is strategically located near our growing customer base.”

Nanya Technology Corp. makes dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, including double data rate (DDR) DRAM chips and DDR2 DRAM chips; DRAM modules, other DRAM products, and wafer and semiconductor products.

The new fabrication plant will make products using 300 millimeter wafer technology.  The old Boise plant has been using 200 millimeter standards.

Durcan told KTVB that “the plant will probably not add any new jobs to the Treasure Valley, but would help preserve existing jobs.”

Micron has laid off more than a thousand people in Boise since June 2007.
