FBI Uncovers Hamilton's Ties to White Supremacist Group

Moscow Shooter Was Member of Aryan Nations

By Joan Opyr, 5-23-07

The Spokesman Review has reported that Jason Hamilton, who on May 19th killed his wife, a Moscow police officer, and the caretaker at the First Presbyterian Church, before turning the gun on himself, was a member of the Aryan Nations, a white supremacist group founded by the late Richard Butler.  Hamilton apparently joined the Aryan Nations in 2000, two years after moving to Moscow.

A visit to the official Aryan Nations website, if you can stand it, reveals that their motto is “Violence Solves Everything!” The exclamation mark is theirs, not mine.

The Spokesman Review also reports that Hamilton was “licensed by the federal government to possess fully automatic weapons, including a military-style machine gun.” Local law enforcement officials seem to have no idea how Hamilton, who had a long and violent history, acquired the license.  Latah County Sheriff Wayne Rausch was also puzzled as to how Hamilton had secured a concealed weapons permit.  His history of domestic violence should have precluded him from owning any firearms, much less being granted a concealed weapons permit.

Hamilton’s ties to the Aryan Nations were uncovered by the FBI investigation of his residence at 1020 Julian Way in Moscow.  Hamilton’s court records will be posted to the Latah County Website sometime today or tomorrow.  Those records indicate that the shooter had a long history of domestic abuse dating back at least fifteen years.  Hamilton’s criminal history extends across four states, including Arizona, Oklahoma, California, and Idaho.  Prior to Saturday night’s fatal shootings, Hamilton had been arrested and/or charged for a number of violent crimes, some drug-related.

For those interested in the long and disturbing history of white supremacist groups in the American West, Dr. Evelyn A. Schlatter’s Aryan Cowboys: White Supremacists and the Search for a New Frontier, 1970 - 2000, is an excellent place to begin.  Schlatter interviewed Richard Butler, the New Mexico Militia in Hobbs, and members of The Order.

Killing one's spouse or family member is a tragic and all too common practice. See: http://www.themedialine.org/news/news_detail.asp?NewsID=17761

Women’s rights advocates, social activists and human rights organizations are launching an international campaign to stop the stoning to death of women in Kurdistan.

The campaign was initiated after pictures of a brutal stoning of a young girl in Kurdistan were distributed on the Internet last month.

Seventeen-year-old Du’a Khalil Aswad of the Yazidi faith was stoned in a Kurdish town on April 7 for liaising with a Muslim Arab man.

Footage of the brutal murder, taken with mobile phone cameras, shows dozens of men stripping her, kicking her and throwing large concrete blocks on her head, while the authorities do nothing to prevent her murder.

“This is the reality of those backward cultures still practiced in those areas and taking lives,” said Diana Nammi, who represents the International Campaign Against Honor Killings.

An honor killing is the phrase used to describe the practice of killing a woman on the grounds that she has committed adultery or had a relationship with a man outside of wedlock. The women are often murdered by members of their community or even by their own families.

Honor killings are practiced in more than 54 countries, Nammi said, mostly in the Middle East and South Asia, where there are large Muslim populations.

Honor killings have increased over the course of the last three decades, and have assumed what Nammi called epidemic proportions.

The recent stoning is a particular brutal way of murder. Nammi said Aswad’s murder was ordered by the community, not by her family, which makes this a “collective” form of honor killing.

Her stoning was not the first case to be recorded in Iraq where the practice is illegal.

In a separate case, a woman was stoned in Kurdistan two years ago.

“It’s like the dark ages again,” Nammi said.

After the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the practice became a legal punishment against women committing adultery.

“By law they are stoning women to death,” Nammi said.

Hey, Kirker blog stalker who lacks the courage to post with your own name:

How DARE you try to hijack the tragedy here in Moscow to advance your own bigotry?!?! We have suffered a terrible tragedy here and SHAME on you for trying to take the focus away from what we as a community are dealing with.

God has a perfect memory, you know, and I have perfect faith your antics will be remembered -- while you lack the courage to sign your name, God knows who you are.
Unfortunately domestic violence is more prevalent than most of us would care to believe, it does not recognize social class, ethnicity, gender or status.

It is a difficult subject to understand since the solution seems so easy, just leave. Without entering into the many reasons why that is easier said than done I have written down some tips for those who find themselves involved with this issue either as a friend or victim.

Things you can do to help a friend in trouble:

Do not judge them by saying things like, “I would never allow that” or “Why don’t you just leave”. It is terrifying to be in a relationship that is abusive and leaving is the time most women are killed. A wonderful thing to say is something like, “I understand how scared you must be. I will be here for you when and if you chose to leave”.
Keep a journal of their bruises, cuts, broken bones, black eyes. Note the date, time and severity. Surprisingly in most states pictures and video tapes are not as compelling as ongoing written testimony, especially from an outside source. This can dramatically effect how long the abuser is sentenced to prison.
Offer to keep a “Whenever you’re ready” bag at your home.
Arrange to have a code word which you and the victim agree on, that means call 911 now. Make it a neutral word or phrase.

If you are being abused:

You must have a plan before leaving.
Tell someone what is happening or what you are afraid is going to happen; a co-worker, cousin, friend, boss, family member.
Decide on a code word or phrase that means, “call 911”. Make it a neutral phrase or word.
Keep a journal of injuries, date, time, severity on a scale of 1-10. If you were kicked, what type of shoes was he/she wearing? What was the weather like, did the children witness the abuse, what was being said before, during and after. If you sought medical help where did you go? Each incident can be prosecuted as a separate offense. You will need a history of abuse. DO NOT KEEP THIS JOURNAL AT HOME.
Have a packed, “When I’m ready” bag and keep it at a friend or family members. It should include: copies of keys, insurance papers, medical records, birth certificates, passports and other important papers, clothing, shoes and extra medicine money, a credit card, and atm card. DO NOT KEEP THIS AT HOME.
Report your injuries to your local YWCA. Most women know that calling the police or getting a restraining order inflames the situation, but document the abuse if you can to an outside source.
Do not stay for the sake of the children. Children learn by your actions, not your words.
Make sure the car has a full tank of gas.
When you decide to leave you will not need to think, just act.

Once you decide to leave:

Know where you will go. If you don’t have friends or family look for a YWCA.
Tell people where you are going and how to contact you.
Change your cell phone number.
Get a PO Box
Change your pattern of behavior. Don’t shop at the same stores, walk the same routes etc.
Do not go anywhere alone.
Immediately obtain a restraining order, or an order of protection. DO NOT DELAY!
Know you are not alone.

Unfortunately domestic violence is more prevalent than most of us would care to believe, it does not recognize social class, ethnicity, gender or status.
Excellent post by Karen Taylor!
Not surprised that the shooter has history of domestic violence, racism and fascination with automatic weapons. Idaho's love affair with bigger guns for little boys is now a sad punchline.
Interesting post by Craig. Violence toward women is very much of a pattern in conservative, paternalistic, theocratic societies, East or West.
Inky, what I had in mind was the impact of tribalism that either motivates or green lights such acts. The particular instrument of brutality is somewhat irrelevant. There are far too many people unable to think outside of ethics and mores of their social tribe especially when it enables a desired reflex response.
Thank you, Karen, for the excellent information.
f**k all of you who want to critisize and judge jason by the media he was a good man who needed help and the government wouldnt give it to him he was a loving uncle father and brother and not some white suppremist just becasuse he was proud to be white
and because no body tried to give him help when he asked now this tradgic moment had to happen R.I.P uncle jake
Today a very confused nation chose to kill a young boy for a sex offense.
A child who committed a sexual act is now going to be murdered by a nation.
How is that possible?
The very same reason that humans are cutting off the heads of people in the middle east.
These combating nations are parasitic of one another, and can not survive without each others hate.
The one thing they need is your guilty feelings about sex.
The one thing that is shared out of love between two people
has become the thing the world wants to kill children with because they are good god fearing people.
How can people in this nation feel their choice has any merit to god or bring any sense of pride to themselves,
of course on this race to the bottom Americans Like John Walsh feel the taking of a life is OK.
Children's lives who have yet to determine who they want to be in life have their lives taken by fools in Windsor knotted ties, playing war for political gain.
Discrimination allows superiority where truth is hidden and corruption tends to creep in.

This is the human equation.

People change day to day. Things change, steal rusts while conceited blows away, but the energy that makes us who we are moves through us as we experience our lives.

Governments, Advocates, Churches, and Media put pressure on sex offenders who are struggling daily to make a way for their families.

These groups are one in the same who have created the realm of secrecy and oppress for gain.

To be ashamed of being a flawed human who makes mistakes, is the responsibility of the person/group/s allowing laws of decimation which is abuse.

Inflicting pain on any person who has been betrayed by that societies recklessness to hide the truth because of its own shame is the ultimate in irresponsibility.

By continuing to advocate lifetime sentences, separation, eradication, concerning sexual offenses is recognition of the breakdown of group/s and any system/s which supports this human rights abuse .

There can be no justice where the responsible party is the society which refuses acceptance of its error.

Thinking that labeling anyone concerning life and death decisions with regard to sexual offenses has no validity.

The stigma/demonization/and continuance of the myth is perpetrated by the group/s and any system/s that makes people suffer for a belief that has only for centuries hidden its own truth.

Please take time to write those who can change our laws.

What ever we do we do to ourselves as money and power leads us by the ring in our nose rendering us unable to hear or see beyond the sound of our own greed.

Any word on if they are going to close down the training facilities Jason Hamilton received instruction at or the sporting store he bought his firearms at? I hope they don't close down that long ranger sniper explosive shooting course that takes place near Orofino. Jason Hamilton is said to have attended that regularly with his friends.
Events like these are why we need a safe and secure universal ID. A secure universal ID will make it harder for mentally ill people to purchase assault weapons or receive training on how to kill people. A very sad story all around
Got a link to that explosives course?
