Real Estate and Development in the Northern Rockies

When we launched Real Estate and Development in the Northern Rockies two years ago, markets around the region were booming and the big questions on many peoples’ minds were about how to control runaway growth. Today the environment is very different – but we think the insights you’ll gain into the economy, the real estate market, and land use issues at this year’s Real Estate and Development in the Northern Rockies conference, taking place Oct. 23-24 in Missoula, will be more valuable than ever.

With an historic election just weeks away and financial markets continuing to gyrate in unpredictable ways, the timing of this event is in some ways fortuitous. On Thursday, Oct 23, we’ll have four of the top journalists in the region assessing the political climate, the election, and how that might impact growth and change in the Northern Rockies. We’re also inviting elected officials to be our special guests at the Thursday reception, and they’ll undoubtedly have a lot of insight into the political dynamics as well.

On Friday morning we’ll focus on the economic picture and real estate market trends. Christopher Thornberg, who stated quite plainly at our first conference that there was a housing bubble and it wasn’t going to last, will be back to offer his assessment of the today’s regional real estate market. We’ll follow that up with a panel of three eminent regional economists, who will help us understand what the Wall Street crisis might mean for Main Street.

At the same time, this year we aim to provide even more depth on hot-button issues including streamside development regulations, green building, local food and agricultural, transportation planning, and new trends in real estate marketing and product development. For the first time, we have an expanded, multi-track program of seminars on Thursday to compliment the plenary session which begins late Thursday.

Having been away from NewWest for awhile on other writing projects, and risking the appearance here of being a shameless flack, I look back at New West's first Real Estate and Development Conference two autumns ago and think of how remarkably prescient it was. Many Realtors in attendance sat in disbelief when the keynote who opened the conference looked 18 to 24 months into the future and predicted a harsh downturn in the building industry in the northern Rockies, following in the wake of trends occurring elsewhere nationally. Many who lived in this region in 2006 could not have imagined how accurate the prediction would prove to be, for better or worse. Good job, Jonathan Weber, for planning a slate of speakers at your annual event who are not only relevant but sometimes timely in ways too stark for people to accept. I wish you well at the event in 2008 and look forward to reading what comes out of it.
