Obama In Oregon.
Nearly one third of Oregon’s population participated in Tuesday’s primary that could have laid the final stepping stones for Sen. Barack Obama to take the Democratic nomination for president.
Obama’s victory in Oregon give the Illinois Senator a total of 1,961 delegates out of the 2,026 needed to secure the nomination.
And while nearly 1 million Oregonians turned in ballots for this year’s election, a study by NewWest.Net reveals some of the reasons more than 2 million citizens in the state did not turn in a ballot.
Here are some the findings: not interested in politics, unregistered to vote, too much madness in the day-to-day grind to vote, fear of marking a ballot without truly knowing what they are voting for, sheer laziness, sports obsessions, Fear, trouble at work, unwillingness to conform, not having a mailing address and so on.
It’s true that having a million Oregonians turn in ballots was impressive, but it’s tough not to think about what would have been the outcome of this election, or any election, if every person with the right to vote acted upon it.
Makes one wonder how valid the term “popular vote” really is.
