Polls Show Obama With Slight Advantage

Political Spotlight Turns To Oregon

It’s not often that Oregon’s May 20 primary plays such an important role in the national political scene. And while it appears Clinton will take Kentucky tomorrow with a commanding advantage, there’s still no clear-cut winner in Oregon.

Although many are predicting Tuesday’s primary in Oregon as the last stepping stone for Sen. Barack Obama to clinch the Democratic nomination, the most recent polls show he is leading Sen. Hillary Clinton by only four points.

Insiders from the Obama’s campaign have been targeting May 20 as a day to declare victory in the Democratic race. Is it possible? Yes. Is it going to happen? We’ll know within 36 hours.

I can tell you one thing for certain, it’s very, very interesting living in Oregon as the climax of the political volcano gets ready to burst. Everywhere, and I’m talking about grocery stores, laundromats, coffee shops, bars, parks and everything in between, talk bubbles about Clinton and Obama.

“He’s got it in the bag.”

“She’s going to surprise some people, I can tell you that.”

“Did you hear Chelsea Clinton was in Bend at the Pull, Pedal, Paddle race?”

It’s not often that Oregon’s May 20 primary plays such an important role in the national political scene. And while it appears Clinton will take Kentucky tomorrow with a commanding advantage, there’s still no clear-cut winner in Oregon.

In the last week alone both Clinton and Obama have spent several days campaigning in Oregon. On Sunday an estimated 72,000 people jammed into Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland to see Obama, making it the largest crowd in Oregon history to turn up for a political rally. According to the Oregonian, an estimated 50,000 turned out in 2004 to see John Kerry speak, although he brought actor Leonardo DiCaprio and musician Jon Bon Jovi alongside. In Kerry’s defense, the popular Portland band, The Decemberists, did warm the mic before Obama arrived, but it was the Illinois Senator most people showed up to see.

In Oregon’s capital this weekend Clinton received another strong endorsement from Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a dedicated superdelegate to her campaign. This weekend Kulongoski referred to Clinton as “the most competent person . . .the smartest person. . .the person most qualified from day one” to be the next president.

We’ll keep you updated here at NewWest.Net as the numbers continue to roll in, but for now the only thing that’s certain is that it’s going to be an interesting Tuesday in Oregon.
