Rattlesnake Creek Rising, City Closes Trails, Bridges
By Matthew Frank, 5-19-08
Rattlesnake Creek is running high and fast and it’s forced Missoula Parks and Recreation to close bridges and trails in Greenough Park. Here’s the press release:
In response to a small stream flood advisory issued by the National Weather Service today, Missoula Parks and Recreation is temporarily closing bridges and trails in Greenough Park. Parks and Recreation is taking these precautionary steps to protect citizens and help prevent damage to park infrastructure.
The large footbridge off the Monroe St. parking lot and the bridge next to the picnic shelter will be temporarily removed while flood conditions exist. Two other bridges in the park and all undeveloped dirt trails along the creek are closed, as well the main parking lot at Monroe and Locust streets. Access to Greenough Park will be temporarily restricted today while maintenance crews are working.
Bridges and trails will re-open when water levels recede substantially. While flood conditions are present, citizens should be extremely cautious around all rivers, streams, creeks and irrigation ditches, and should be especially vigilant about keeping children and pets away from moving water. For updates on flood watches and warnings, visit www.weather.gov. The Missoula County Office of Emergency Services Flood Hotline, 258-4850, is staffed around the clock. As always, if an emergency situation threatens lives or property, phone 911. The Office of Emergency Services reminds citizens that flood conditions may develop in unexpected places without advance warning, and serious hazards may not be obvious. People encountering flood-related hazards should exercise extreme caution. They should also report those conditions as soon as possible by phoning 258-4850 or 911. Citizens can find additional flood information at the County Emergency Services website, www.co.missoula.mt.us/oes/.
