EARLY SNOW

So Much Snow, Aspen May Open Early

By David Frey, 10-27-06

Just one more storm.

The Aspen Skiing Co. says that's all it would take to open the slopes before its scheduled Thanksgiving opening.

"It's definitely possible," Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle tells the Aspen Daily News. "We just need a little more. If the snow cooperates and we don't get a warm spell, we'll do the best we can to get an early opening."

Aspen has been benefiting from unusually good early-season conditions thanks to several fall storms that have moved through. The last storm left behind 8 to 10 inches. Skico is reporiting 18 to 20 inches of coverage on the tops of Aspen Mountain, Highlands and Snowmass.

Some mountain towns saw up to two feet in the latest storm.

Other ski areas have already opened. Wolf Creek opened on Friday, its earliest opening ever. Loveland and Arapahoe Basin have been open for about two weeks.

The Daily News says snowmaking is set to start on Nov. 1, and crews have already rolled out the snowcats to pack down the snow that has fallen on Aspen Mountain, Snowmass and Highlands.
