The Return Of Dr. Octagon

By Colin Hickey, 1-26-07

The first time I head Dr. Octagon (AKA Kool Keith) I was living in Laramie, Wyoming and going to the University of Wyoming. I had been invited to a party that night that a friend of a friend was putting on. I always hate those parties because you end up only knowing one person there and they usually leave early. So there I was sitting by the stereo like always shuffling through this random person’s CD collection. That’s where I found the Doctor. After a pretty sweet party fade I put the Kool Keith record on and instantly fell in love. I’ve always been a fan of hip hop/rap and as a kid, I discovered De La Soul and NWA while simultaneously listening to the Sex Pistols and Faith No More. Junior High was a magical time.

Kool Keith first hit the scene in the late '80s early '90 with the New York group the Ultramagnetic MC’s. In 1996, he teamed up with Dan “the Automator” Nakamura and DJ Qubert and Dr. Octagon was born. The album was full of sci-fi movie samples, strange beats and rhymes about everything from space to voodoo. He has even said that his favorite rhyme of all time is voodoo/doodoo. Kool Keith had made an alter ego only to have him killed by his next alter ego called Dr. Doom. At the beginning of Kool Keith’s next album his new alter ego Dr. Doom kills Dr. Octagon. After checking Kool Keith’s website you find that he has more than fifty alter egos. Here’s a couple of my favorites Black Elvis, Mr. Gerbik, Fly Ricky the Wine Taster, Elvin Presley and of course Exotron Geiger Counter One Plus Megotron.

Dr. Octagon is back from the grave and he just released a new album called The Return of Dr. Octagon. The new record is hip hop but it’s different than any other hip hop I’ve ever heard.

The Doctor will be playing The Boulder Theater on Wednesday January 31st. Tickets for this show are only $18.50. He will also be playing The Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City on Saturday February 3rd. Tickets for that show are $15.00. That’s a pretty good price considering no one really knows who will show up on stage.
