Campus Nightlife

Atmosphere Rocks University

If you missed it last night, Atmosphere killed it. The crowd was rowdy and fun and everyone seemed to have a great time. I for one was stoked to see an artist pumped on the few hundred people that showed up. No big venues for these guys, just Econolines and college campuses. Pre-show, Slug and Ant were just chilling in the Beer Garden, waiting, watching, and vibing off the opening act and most of the people didn't even recognize him. There was an interaction between Slug and the crowd. No insincere image to uphold just down-home Midwestern love for hip-hop.

But, people will continue to discuss Slug, and his rhymes and his style, but I know where I stand-- Slug is fun. Remember, the new Atmosphere disc comes out on Oct. 4, 2005. Here is the interview.

TONIGHT!! Atmosphere!!

Finally, tonight is the night Atmosphere rolls in for a few hours of craziness before motoring on to may more towns in their "Pour Me Another" Tour. Remember, 8:00pm at the UC Ballroom.

Well, if you just can't wait and want to wet your appetite before the show, here is the NewWest interview with Slug, frontman for Atmosphere.

Nature

Infamous Montanans: Ted Kaczynski

Montana has a long-standing tradition with its wilderness. People pride themselves on the minimalist inside each of us. Be it biking, walking, or hiking; Montanans love the outdoors. Primitivism. Well, maybe not that, but there is a movement, especially among college students, hiking, living and fighting to save nature. But what happened to Ted Kaczynski in our Montana woods before he became the "Unabomber"? Also, primitivism, the theisis around it and the hypocracy embedded within it. Read on to find out more. Hot Spots

Girls Gone Wild(erness)

"Like, o-my god, like, I totally LOVE the University of Montana." Well, at Least Cosmo GIRL does. They named UM-Missoula one of the Top 50 best colleges for girls. Citing class options and other unique qualities such as percentage of peace corp volunteers and adventures in the wilderness as enticing characteristics for future freshmen. I would have to say that COMSO Girl totally, like, is in love with us.

Disappointing though is the fact that UM also has the second lowest average ACT score of a 23 with only Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. beating UM out with a wopping 21.

Also, hot news off the Cosmo GIRL site an online poll is showing that 21% of voters feel that the parties will be the best thing about college and that it is Dean, NOT Jess or Luke, that is driving a wedge between Rory and Lorelai on the Gilmore Girls--goddamn Dean!

Regional Protest

Voices of the West!

What do you have going on this weekend? If you are just staring at the same walls, why not jump into action? This Saturday students, professors, moms and dads will be in Seattle for the regional protest against the war in Iraq and racism.

This regional rally is part of the national protest in Washington, DC where thousands of people are descending on the steps of our pillars of government to voice their objection to the Bush administrations policies, specifically telling him to bring the troops home, NOW! You can find out more about the rally at the A.N.S.W.E.R. website and also at the United for Peace and Justice website.

Tell The Regents To Lower Costs

Today the Kaimin, had a small little blurb about how the Board of Regents was going begin discussions on the cost of textbooks at their meeting. This is a refreshing topic that the Regents are finally taking serious after Kaimin stories about rising textbook cost and student frustration over the inefficiencies that have plauged the UM Bookstore.

If you are frustrated ove rthe rising costs associated with the University of Montana, contact the Regents yourself! [more]

Update!

The Education of an Utterance

With so much response to my last post, How I Almost Got Arrested Last Night I thought that this would be the perfect follow-up on the subject of profanity. In today's New York Times there is an article so fitting I couldn't have planned it better myself. [more]

College Controversy

College Newspaper Fires Controversial Writer

Where does the line between unethical and simply distasteful get drawn in journalism? When radical views are expressed and the public is offended should someone take the blame? Recently this, and as well as many other questions that surround journalism and opinion columns have blasted to the surface at the University of North Carolina college newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel. How I Almost Got Arrested Last Night

This is my first hand account of how I was almost arrested last night for swearing in public. Police intimidation and fear had coupled together to scare me into caving in on my own civil liberties. Click "more" to read the story. [more]
