Tad Dale, a vice president of Montana Resources, leads tours of the two pit mines at Butte. The backdrop here is the Berkeley Pit, which is slowing filling with acidic water heavily laden with copper and other metals. The company, which is owned by Washington Companies of Missoula (which is mostly owned by billionaire industrialist Dennis Washington), also has another, nearby, pit mine in the works called the Continental.
