Go Griz!
Grizzlies Upset Nevada in NCAA Opener
By Jonathan Weber, 3-16-06
The Montana Grizzlies on Thursday not only pulled off the biggest upset of the NCAA basketball tournament's opening round, they made it look easy. Up against a Nevada team that enjoyed a big height advantage and came into the tourney with a 14-game winning streak, the Griz led from the opening tip and walked off with an 87-79 victory. The Griz showed poise, hustle, great shooting and excellent coaching in a dominating performance that risks raising expectations for the next round just a little too high. After all, teams from the Big Sky conference never make it to the Sweet Sixteen. Or do they?
Andrew Straight had 22 points for the Griz, Virgil Matthews added 20, Kevin Criswell had 18 and Jordan Hasquet 16 - a good expression of the balanced team showing. Second-year coach Larry Krystkowiak, a one-time Griz superstar himself, has a lot to be proud of as the Griz, the number 12 seed in the regional, gear up for a huge game on Saturday against Boston College.
