Utah kills the bomb
Divine Strake is Dead
By Tracy Medley, 2-22-07
Divine Strake is dead. According to both the Deseret Morning News and the Salt Lake Tribune, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, who intended to detonate the extremely controversial, 700-ton non-nuclear bomb in the Nevada desert have formally canceled that test. Though they’ve given no official reason at this time, Utahns can rest assured knowing their voices of disapproval were heard loud and clear.
Gov. John Huntsman, Rep. Jim Matheson and Sen. Orrin Hatch, all vocal opponents of the test expressed relief and renewed conviction in the power of democracy. Gov. Huntsman was quoted in the D-News saying, “For me and every other Utahn, we’re jubilant. This should be a message loud and clear that the system does work.”
“Everybody in Utah can rest easier tonight knowing that the government listened,” Sen. Hatch said in an email to the Deseret News.
