Fish and Game Seeks Moose Poacher
By Jennifer Gelband, 10-15-06
Monday, October 10, was opening day of elk and deer season in Idaho. Already the Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking information on one poached mature bull moose on the north side of Moscow Mountain that was probably shot on Monday.
The moose was shot and left to waste, and Fish and Game wants to hear from anyone who observed suspicious activity in the area. “We would appreciate talking to anyone who was in the area, who may have seen something suspicious,” said Barry Cummings, Fish and Game senior conservation officer. “The more pieces of the puzzle we have, the better our chances of making the case and apprehending the violator.”
When it comes to hunting animals like moose, there’s a tag issued for each animal. For moose especially, only a very limited number of tags are given out. Fish and Game keep population numbers of the animals, and based on those numbers they determine how many can be killed and still maintain a healthy population. That’s why poaching one moose angers a lot of hunters, and also a lot of other people who just think it’s cruel to kill something and leave it to rot.
The shooters probably arrived from the Hatter Creek road area. So anyone with information should call their local Fish and Game conservation officer or the Citizens Against Poaching hotline (208-632-5999). Callers can remain anonymous – and if it isn’t enough to just bust these bad guys and honor the life of one moose, there’s a reward offered for information leading to the violator’s apprehension.
