Montana Fire Photos: The Black Cat Fire in Pictures
By Courtney Lowery, 8-16-07
The Black Cat fire burning northwest of Missoula sparked on the afternoon of August 14 and quickly ran to 600 acres, forcing the immediate evacuation of about 20 homes near Evaro along Highway 93.
The fire is burning through timber, grasses and shrubs and has been largely a wind-driven fire, showcasing crowning and torching. Fire officials say the growth potential is “extreme” as is the fire’s behavior thus far.
Because of its proximity to a major city and its surrounding towns, the fire has a tangible reminder (even more tangible than the ash on our cars and the smoke in the air) that yes, this is going to be a long fire season.
In this photo gallery, you’ll find photos of the Black Cat fire from every day since it started, photos from NewWest.Net photographers Anne Medley and Chris Lombardi and a few stunning night shots from NewWest.Net reader Jason Rocheleau.
