Rep. Chris Cannon Dismisses Foley Scandal
By Tracy Medley, 10-06-06
Utah Representative Chris Cannon made some rather shocking and unfortunate statements regarding the Mark Foley scandal, which aired on KSL’s Nightside program. In a brief interview with SLC-Spin blogger Ethan Millard, Cannon seemed to blame the kids.
Ex-Florida Representative Mark Foley is under investigation for allegedly having lascivious conversations with minors through email and instant messages. The minors involved were part of the Congressional Page Program.
At a fund-raiser for School Choice Rep. Cannon shared his thoughts on the scandal, “There’s not much we can do except educate kids to the dangers,” he said.
“Frankly, this is the responsibility of the parents – If you get online you may find creepy people who will do and say creepy things – avoid them.”
Cannon should be reminded that Mark Foley isn’t just any old creep on the internet; he was a congressman who may have used his position to sexually harass young men.
If these comments weren’t enough Cannon went on to say that the pages involved were “precocious kids” who “egged [Congressman Foley] on.”
“It looks like this one email was a prank - a bunch of kids sitting around, egging this guy on.”
Cannon continued, “The world is a complicated place.”
Say what?
There is nothing complicated about expecting our government officials to act with some measure of dignity around minors, even if baited (which has not been proven the case) and further there is nothing complicated in holding those officials accountable to the standards they themselves put in place.
Cannon’s position on this matter is disturbing at best and alarmingly revealing at worst. His attitude may offer some insight as to why House Republicans were so grossly negligent in taking any action against Foley when they were originally alerted to his misconduct years ago.

And then of course there is honest Harry Reid, and his new revelations.
I have said before pwoer corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, it is time for term limits for all fo them.
What I find sad is the unwillingness of "the Right-wing" to just accept and admit that they are capable of making mistakes without immediately having to remind everyone that "Democrats make mistakes too."
Yes, we know they do, of course they do. Both Dems and Republicans are capable or crappy bahavior....
But be honest with yourself! If Mark Foley had been a Democrat wouldn't Republicans be crucifying him and the members of Congress who ignored his behavior?
Can you tell me a Democrat who has been booted by his party for a similar offence? It does seem to me that there is a double standard, and it does reach ridiculous even if Republicans are considered the party of morality. The Democrat party got rid of the guy in Louisiana with all the money in his freezer real fast didn't they? And of course we saw the Republican party demand that Nancy Pelosi leave....no? Is she and all of the other memembers of congress on both sides of the isle ignoring what he did? I think so, and that is the corruption of power.
But if Foley is the best the Dems can come up with as a reason to try to rid themselves of all Repubs, that is really sad.
The bigger question is why he hid the sale from the senate, and why he and the other guy kept the sale secret, and why his name does not appear on the corporation papers despite owning 3/4 of the corporation. On top of that he listed the money as income from selling land he and his wife privately owned.
He has been involved in questionable real estate dealings in Nevada for years, is that why?
Google Harry Reid + land, it will be an eye opener.....unless you don't want to know.
