Wolf Delisting Edges Closer

JACKSON, Wyo. – Today is the deadline for public comment on a federal plan to take the gray wolf off the endangered species list.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service extended the open comment period regarding measures that would allow wolves to be killed in the northern Rockies to protect elk and livestock.

Governor Dave Freudenthal and the federal agency struck a compromise earlier this spring to allow the Cowboy state to join Idaho’s and Montana’s wolf management plans.

National advocacy groups, such as Defenders of Wildlife, have stepped up a campaign to defeat the wolf’s delisting and a controversial rule change that could reintroduce the practice of aerial shootings of wolves.

At the center of the debate are differing opinions on how many wolf breeding pairs should be allowed to exist in Wyoming, its national parks and whose plan includes the best available science.

I think it is terrible to even think about removing the wolf from the endangerd species act. i have paid my taxes to pay to have them reintroduced where that should naturaly be and now the government will allow the total destruction of the species again. This is just notright, we need to bring the eco system back in ballance. it seams to me that the people who want the wolf removed is just so that they can have people pay to shoot them and then pay to shoot more elk, it's just for money, thats all its about. an eits not right.

Without a doubt, state G&F;are far better able to manage the wolves than federal bureaucrats. They are on the ground, they are seeing the decreasing elk herds, the lack of elk calves surviving the first year of life. FWS can't even make their annual reports match up. Their focus is political, not actual on the ground management. If it isn't in the book, tough.
