Bad Idea

Senator Looks to Bar Goverment Weather Forecasts

By Jonathan Weber, 4-24-05

We tend to be weather freaks here at New West, and with the bold assumption that your are too we offer what we think are the best weather links available: those that go straight to the National Weather Service pages (they are in the left-hand column below, and on all our city pages). The Weather Service sites offer the most detailed forecast discussions, excellent maps, and all sorts of fun and informational links and features; we like them much better than the ad-cluttered offerings from commercial providers like AccuWeather. But Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania) has introduced a bill that would prohibit the Weather Service from offering such information directly to the public. The Palm Beach Post had an excellent story on the move late last week, and bloggers around the country have been chiming in - including the The Raw Story, which did the reporting to find out what, exactly, might be motivating Santorum. Hint: AccuWeather is based in Pennsylvania.
