Bears, Dinosaurs and ‘Divine Design’

By Jonathan Weber, 6-03-05

OK, we'll admit it: We love bear stories and this one's got great photos. Check out the Salt Lake Tribune's photo story on the release of 14 bears into the wild (the largest in state history) or the Deseret News'story on the critters.

And, we can't pass up a good dinosaur story either. Turns out a Montana T-Rex is showing scientists how to tell a "She-Rex" from a "He-Rex," the AP reports. Good stuff.

In weather news, the Casper Star-Tribune reports that scientists are ready to take the skies over the Wind River Mountains into their own hands. The Wyoming Water Development Commission has given a Boulder, Colorado company a $1.9 million contract to start cloud seeding in the range and at the headwaters of the the North Platte River.

Finally, on the culture wars beat, Utah State Senator Chris Buttars is the latest politician to dismiss the constitutional separation of church and state as unnecessary impediment to a proper Christian agenda. According to the Salt Lake Tribune Buttars plans to lead a fight to introduce "divine design" - i.e., creationism in pseudo-scientific clothing - into the Utah public school curriculum. "The only people who will be upset about this are atheists," the Trib quotes Buttars as saying. Let's see, is it the stupidity of that statement that's the most appalling, or the bigotry?
