Tuition Post Wins New West Writing Contest

By Courtney Lowery, 3-12-05

You heard it here first. New West is sending Erin Madison of Missoula to Tamarack Resort to relax after posting two, yes, two, stories to our Citizen Journalism forum. Erin's winning story is titled Should a university be a business?, a story about tuition hikes at the University of Montana.

Erin takes a different angle than most of the other tired coverage of the tuition fray by highlighting some of the things the University is doing to offset costs (like making a deal with Coke and planning to develop a retirement community) as well as giving our readers a good background on tuition raises in UM's history.

Erin not only did a great job on the story, but she also took a lot of pains to get it up on time. When she encountered problems, she didn't give up. Instead, she emailed me several times to make darn sure the story was getting posted.

The story also fostered some dialogue on our site -- with four comments on the issues raised in the piece.

Good job Erin, and congratulations. Take a tree-run for me.
