If you’re one of the people who wonder what keeps anglers going, casting and casting and casting and more casting. Take a look at this photo, and then you know. It could happen on the next cast, you know.

Saskatchewan’s status as a premier North American destination for freshwater fishing got a boast recently by producing the new world record rainbow trout.

Adam Konrad of Saskatoon caught the monster trout in Lake Diefenbaker, located in the province’s southwest. The record-breaker weighed in at whooping 43.6 pounds, with a length of 38.75 inches and a girth measurement of 34 inches. The previous world record weighed 43.2 pounds and was caught in Alaska in 1970.

After staring at the photo for a few hours, all I can say is: Amazing it could even swim!

Adam Konrad and his twin brother Sean have made past news headlines, breaking the provincial rainbow trout record three times last July with catches weighing 28.39, 30.0, and 33.3 pounds.  By fall, the brothers smashed their own record with a 34.5-pound lunker. In the past two fishing seasons, the Konrads have reportedly caught and released back into Lake Diefenbaker more than 200 rainbow trout exceeding 20 pounds and at least a dozen more weighing over 30 pounds.

Recreational anglers spend an estimated $200 million annually in Saskatchewan, according to Tourism Saskatchewan. The province is home to 100,000 lakes, boasts an abundance of species and offers some of the most unique fishing environments in Canada.

For the anglers who have to know the details, Konrad caught the recordh on a Mepps Syclops spoon and ANDE line using a Rhino Indestructible road and ABU Garcia ambassador reel. And on six-pound test line!
