Missoula’s Progressive Talk Radio Goes Off the Air
By Dana Green, 2-28-06
Just last summer, a Missoula radio station launched the town’s first progressive talk radio program, throwing down the gauntlet to the conservative radio hosts already dominating the airwaves.
Now operators of KNS, 105.9 on the dial, plan to drop the progressive talk radio format this week, citing weak advertising sales. Update: Air America went off the air Tuesday afternoon.
The talk radio station featured local news and commentary, but the heart of the programming was Air America Radio, a national network featuring well known, left-leaning talk show hosts and comedians such as Al Franken, Rachel Maddow, and Janeane Garofalo.
Dave Cowan is general manager for the local company, Mt. Sentinel Broadcasting, which runs the three stations: The Trail 103.3, adult contemporary 104.5, and KNS. He said Salt Lake City-based Simmons Media, which took over Mt. Sentinel operations just last month, made the final decision to change formats last week.
“I would have liked to try for a couple more months," Cowan said. “But if it were my money it was losing, I don’t know if I could do it."
Getting people to listen wasn’t the problem – liberal talk radio was a huge hit in Missoula from the beginning.
Just last fall, Cowan said, an Eastlan ratings survey in Missoula and the Bitterroot showed the Al Franken show with a respectable 3.6 percent of listeners – ahead of Rush Limbaugh, who runs on two area stations.
“Al Franken was huge," Cowan said. “(He) clobbered Rush. The listeners were there – and the commercials were inexpensive."
However, selling ads during Al’s airtime was a different story.
Cowan said that local businesses were reluctant to commit to the alternative programming.
"There seems to be concern from advertisers with being associated" with controversial programming, he said. "I didn't think that would be a problem in Missoula of all places."
KNS Sales Manager Jim Fisher agreed that business owners were shying away from the format – even if they were avid listeners to the station.
"A lot of them loved to listen, but they didn't want to put their name on it," Fisher said.
But Lesley Lotto, who resigned last week as the news and programming director for KNS after learning about changes in format and her duties, said she believes the KNS sales team didn’t wholeheartedly try to sell the product.
“The sales staff was not supporting it," Lotto said, adding that while some sales team members had tried to market the liberal format, others, she felt, were against the programming and didn't have incentive to sell it.
Cowan admitted that the KNS sales team might have decided it was easier to sell ads on the Trail or the adult contemporary station.
“Some of it’s our fault," he said. “Because we were so new, we maybe didn’t really try to sell the hard one."
Both Lotto and Cowan believe a liberal talk radio station is financially viable in Missoula – if there is enough cash flow to survive downturns.
Mt. Sentinel Broadcasting was a bold venture from the beginning – Kevin Terry, a radio engineer who worked in Missoula in the 1990s and now lives in Salt Lake, bought the three Missoula frequencies at an FCC auction in 2004. He started the company from scratch, setting up shop in Missoula and leasing operations to Marathon Media. Simmons took over operations from Marathon last month.
“If we’d been Clear Channel, it would have been a lot easier," Cowan said, referring to the national media giant which operates 1,200 stations across the country and six stations – three FM and three AM – in the Missoula market. “There’s no doubt there was strong support in the community, but from an economic (standpoint), we didn’t have that luxury."
In fact, Cowan had a business suggestion for the folks over at Clear Channel – pick up the Air America radio program for one of the stations with weaker ratings.
“Clear Channel or Fisher should pick up the format and put it on one of their AM stations," he said.
Meanwhile, 105.9 fans will now have to tune in online to hear Al Franken, who just visited Missoula last month to a sold-out crowd and much media fanfare.
Instead, on the local station they’ll hear a traditional music format, one that Lotto dismissively calls "just an iPOD shuffle."
“They’re going to take off a station that competed with no one (and) had phenomenal ratings, and put on a station that will compete with four others. It just doesn’t make any sense," she said.
Update: Still no word from Simmons Media reps on why they pulled the liberal talk radio format on KNS. Meanwhile, here are two articles on Billboard's Web site on Air America's finances and affiliates turning over to different formats after being bought by different companies.

We have our rights as Americans to force corporations to cater to our whims. We could take over the radio station and provide radio for THE PEOPLE!
We could threaten businesses that are advertising on competing stations and demand they buy air time for Air America or ELSE we declare a FATWA against the infidels!
This Salt Lake City, Utah-based corporation, Simmons Media, purchased Mt. Sentinel Broadcasting a month ago. I just “open secrets?ed the board chair and CEO of Simmmons Media — David Simmons. Lo and behold: he’s a big Republican donor. He’s given $1500 to the Utah Republican Party, plus $1000 to G.W. Bush in each of the 2000 and 2004 election cycles. (Check it out yourself at http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/i ndex.asp ).
So, is it a coincidence that a corporation headed by big Republican donor takes over our local Progressive talk radio station, and then a month later guts the format?
I don’t think so.
I was an avid listener of 105.9 KKNS, emphasis on was; I will not be tuning into your radio stations any longer, including 103.3 FM.
A sad day indeed when people are afraid to advertise for fear of what others might say.
That, in my book, is reason enough to keep a station on the air. But, I am not surprised since now the main owners are from Salt Lake City, a very conservative city and State.
Shame on the sales people for not trying harder. Shame on the sales people and the frightened businesses who call themselves Americans. What happened to free speech and hearing all sides and respectively agreeing to disagree. That's American. The other is . . . Nazi Germany, China, Saudi Arabia, et al. Sad day indeed.
Sincerely,
Rachel S Courteau
We have to figure out a way to get this format back on the air! Who do we call or write to? Is there another station that might be willing to pick up some of this?
Let's quit bitching and do something about it people! Seriously! We don't have to put up with radio monoculture and right wing crap.
Stand up!
Maybe they made the decision that the target audience of Air America consists of people who are anti-business and anti-corporation, that think profit is evil, and whose idea of a vacation is going to WTO riots in Seattle and smashing up a Starbucks or a McDonalds.
In short, why waste money advertising to an audience that hates you and your product.

I am, however, opposed to the right wing's warmongering and profiteering, and I enjoy thoughtful, progressive dialogue on how to make the world a better place (for ALL, not just SOME).
D. Annetta-What do you base your writing that Air America doesn't sell air time upon? Your opinion? nice.--next time-keep it to yourself. But, lets' assume, for the sake of your lunacy, that Air America-nationally-couldn't sell ads. That does not mean with a 3.2+rating, locally, Air America radio (via KKNS) could not sell air time? Can you get your biased brain around that? It would defy reason considering that competing stations, with lower listener ratings, sell air time. Your point is opinion, rather trivial, and ill-considered.
Damail--Are you joking? Your non-sense would be funny if it were not 3rd grader-ish immaturity.. stone throwing. Perhaps--just perhaps--you might look at what the likes of Rush Flimbaugh and other s have said.
Rhetoric is not the bastion of the Left or the Right-MORON.
If I were to begin to list the comments Rush as made regarding the Jets QB, 'towel heads', or what O'Reilly has called blacks etceteras ad nausum infinitum. the list goes on and on.
My impression is that people anticipated Montanan's to be more flexible--anticipated that airing a program with good ratings would be enough and would attract advertisers. That's true in most radio & t.v. markets-certainly larger ones. Sadly, in Montana there is a disease of 'old boys' club mentality that Msla Peaks and others probably didn't think would be so difficult to overcome; lack of sales force motivation certainly couldn't have helped either. I think that the hard-cold reality of MT is just that. It's an ugly side to an otherwise beautiful state. Yet, people are unwilling to talk about or acknowledge the presence of such dynamics.
Clearly, breaking into markets here requires more than ratings.
In that sense, it's a sad day.
If there was ANY place for AAR to succeed in MT it was Missoula. Did the college crowd not connect to it? I know that the humor content has been shaky since MS went off the air but... DAMNIT. I was so hopeful about that!
The average Montanan just isn't ready to embrace free speech, cultural diversity, gay rights or even education.
The New Hampshire state motto, which happens to be on their license plates, reads.."LIVE FREE OR DIE". They believe it.......Most people here just don't accept that concept.
It is a sad day.
I also have a hard time believeing that KKNS's audience wouldn't be profitable to local businesses. It seems to me that left-leaning audiences prefer to shop locally and keep their money in their communities. For example, I use Bob's Sew and Vac (a KKNS advertiser) for my sewing machine tune-ups and supply puchases. Next time I go to this business, I will thank them for having the courage to advertise on a progressive talk station. I also found this website beause of KKNS, and Western Montana Help Wanted.com. I hope I will be able to listen to Air America locally again, instead of via internet.
While perhaps some of the blame can be placed on an inept sales staff, as noted previously, we simply can't make too much of the fact--pointed out by Derek many comments ago--that Simmons Media Group is #18 out of the top 20 TV/radio station contributors to federal candidates and parties thus far in the 2006 election cycle. Simmons has contributed $12,000--100% of it to Republicans.
This has much more to do with the consolidation of media ownership than with the mindset of the "average" Montanan.
Thanks for your note. Although, perhaps you should have slowed down and read mine. But, for your benefit I'll cut-n-paste what I said as far as 'swings both ways' What I said:
"Rhetoric is not the bastion of the Left or the Right-MORON."
The use of 'moron' was initially a pun on rhetorical commentary but-judging from your reply-it was probably more apt than pun; LOL.
I might add that once one accepts that the door of rhetoric swings both ways-something, evidently, we agree on, your point becomes mute.
It then becomes a discussion as to why advertisers will put money behind right leaning shows and not left leaning shows. Clearly, there was an audience, so a reasonable person-unlike yourself-might conclude that the reason is because of a.) who controls those centers for advertising b.) fear on the part of business owners regarding being accepted by their customers if they advertised on a station that leaned left. (there are demographic issues etc.-but, for the sake of discussion, we'll leave that out.)
Because, if going by ratings alone were the criteria than business folks would have been more willing to turn valuable adv. dollars to KKNS. They were not.
The reason people, in part, did not advertise on KKNS was fear of alienating the ideological right of center. That speaks more to tolerance and lack of being open-minded than it does to your "point".
Perhaps, intolerance is something to be proud of in this fine state. However, I think it peels back and exposes a more 'sheltered' and intolerant side of many in Montana.
The arguement that Missoula didn't support KNS economically is so unbelievable to me that I am tempted to agree with another commentor and blame this on the political leanings of the parent company. It is too suspicious to dismiss.
Grow up, Rachel. Grow the hell up. You don't have a "right" to hear opinions, much less what you consider a "fair" balance of them.
"The average Montanan just isn't ready to embrace free speech, cultural diversity, gay rights or even education."
Jesus H. Christ on a pole, J Black, got a gift for hyperbole? You "progressives" can't even define your own terms, much less talk intelligently about them.
MoClubber--Stations in the Msla. mrkt. with lower rating shares, with similiar demographics, have done well with advertisers. They've remained profitable. So, the suggestion that KKNS was hemorrhaging money is only part of the story and does little to address the unwillingness of advertisers to put dollars into KKNS advertising (and as Lotto has said-sales force personnel were not motivated to sell the product).
Why is it that businesses were unwilling?
a.) The format was against their ideological preferences. Which is their right.
and/or
b.) concern that people would not patronize their establishment(s) or utilize their services if heard advertising on KKNS. I would characterize that as fear of how intolerant Montanans' can be.
I doubt the answer is point A. Because, most business owners will bend their personnal ideology to make money. So, my guess is that they were more worried about point B. Intolerance.
Assclown.
The cat's out of the bag now.
We now know how nice it was to hear intelligent like minded folks speak with common sense about the mess we have in the world today.
Thanks KNS for priming the pump and letting us know how wonderful and fun and hopeful radio can be.
I've lived in Missoula about 10 years and was thrilled when KNS arrived, finally some push back to the reich wing yak ers that have flooded America's air waves. My family and friends really got a kick out of the Air America programs. I have laughed really hard many, many times over the past chunk of months and have really been amazed by news and dialog you just don't hear in the mainstream. I know there are a lot of missoula folks like me who are reeling at the shock of the AirAmerica radio being yanked off the air like that.
So time act people! Talk to your friends, talk to as many people as you can. Let's get the Air America back on the air. How much does it cost? What about a fundraiser like public radio? I'd give $200 bucks tonight if someone legit started one.
What about pirate radio? I was talking to a friend tonight who has a friend that runs a pirate station in seattle i think. I saw a special on tv a couple of years ago about a guy in berkely that was mass producing low cost radio broadcasting equipment. I think most of it was sold to foreign countries etc.
What are the FCC laws? How does one legally get band width on the radio?
No business would support Air America? Give me a break! Even if it were so, businesses sure as shit would support Air America now. They would be fricking heros. I and many others would buy everything there. Do you know a business leader?
I'm tired of the bush's lies and screw ups.
I'm tired of the war.
I'm tired of the greed.
I'm tired of the arrogance.
The voters need to hear more than just one point of view over and over and over.
Freedom of speech please!
How the hell would you know what it takes to run a business? Two-cent heads like yours couldn't run a battery -- and of course, that's why we have NPR: To keep the stoned retards who couldn't make a living in the real world gainfully employed with tax dollars robbed off of real people. The station went off the air because it wasn't making money, and because Lotto's show didn't have enough listeners to sell turd ads to a populace hungry for turds. If Lesley had made an effort to learn the issues and not treat Montanans with anything short of disdain, maybe three people would have taken notice. Instead, she sucked ass in a large way. KNS died because it sucked. And to hell with stations that suck. Let all of them suffer the same fate. Get back to your NPR, you "progressives." I suspect you may have missed some really boring programming while those PSA's on KNS were playing in an unending loop.
"Freedom of speech, please!"
Aren't you on the Internet, you stain of maximum shitness? Why don't you actually READ the First Amendment? You don't have a "right" to opinions that fall under your ideological lines, you lump of vacuum lint. Thanks to the First Amendment, you're offered all sorts of deviant and divergent opinions from left-wing jackasses such as yourself. In fact, thanks to the First Amendment, there are more opinions from ass clowns like you out there than ever before. So instead of bitching about how your First Amendment rights are being violated, why don't you get your hairy ass out there and start your own publication? Plenty of copy machines and telephone poles out there for an enterprising man like yourself.
(this is my first time on a blog)
you just have to ignore these harsh angry souls that apparently have no where else to vent?
well, ok, i can do that.
but, there are plenty of good councelors out there that can help you with that anger. or consider taking a walk outside in the fresh air...
interesting world this blog sphere...
later...
Jesus, who made a few astute yet unpopular observations in his day, never hid behind a pseudonym...nor (one assumes) did Rachel or J Black. But look who did --"MoClubber."
Posting an offensive, obnoxious attack is easy when it's anonymous. It's also gutless. I suggest we stop rising to the bait, stop sinking to his/her level, and spend the precious moments of our lives on something more productive and meaningful, like stopping the slaughter of Yellowstone bison. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Money talks louder than all the blathering and blogging in the world. A great suggestion was very recently posted -- listen to the Simmons Media Group stations long enough to determine who the advertisers are, then start calling and e-mailing those establishments with our thoughts. If listeners aren't hearing their ads on a regular basis, then they are throwing advertising dollars away...not a winning business strategy.
That said, you are a rude, intolerant individual, and your frequent profanity and closed mind is not helpful if you wish to persuade others to accept your point of view. But of course that isn't the purpose of your comments; you want to lash out in rage against people who have different opinions and values than yourself. Good luck with that.
So, rather than ridicule each other as all have been doing above on this website, I'd like to offer an idea. Maybe, if 1290 AM were to put Air America on one of their other stations like 1340 AM (is that one of their's), then they could go to someone like Bitterroot Ford and say advertise on both stations. Support free speech in all ways - left and right. Don't take sides. Maybe I'm naive, but, all I care is that we get AA back in Missoula.
As someone posted earlier, one would think that just like any advertiser would be a hero for advertising on Air America if it were brought back, so, too, would be the station. AM 1340 is my hero! AM 1340 is my hero! (I would be saying that.) I would think that this would be very apparent to any of the other station owners out there. Then again, maybe they knew that KKNS was just doomed to fail with Air America and just sat back, watched them, and laughed. Otherwise, wouldn't they have brought Air America to Missoula before KKNS did? Thank goodness for streeming!
Thank you for your time.
we are working to keep this going! airamericamissoula.com - watch for it - CLOSELY.
While you're at it, google "Disney politics" and see what you get. Yet another right-wing media conglomerate selling lies as truth to a citizenry who knows more about the Simpsons than the First Amendment. I guess we get what we deserve.
Up until recently, KKNS 105.9 was a breath of fresh air in an atmosphere of political one-sidedness. We know now with the advent of cable news that the media is subject to bias and can often be used as a tool by those who have the power and the will to do so(i.e. FOX News). KKNS certainly had its bias as well but at least it was attempting to balance the political scale that was already so heavily overloaded on the “right” by the likes of Limbaugh and O’Reilly. You would think that Progressive Talk Radio would thrive in Missoula but it took a buy-out by someone from the “progressive” city of Salt Lake to pull the plug claiming that KKNS wasn’t profitable. Sounds familiar doesn’t it? If we really are community of “open and honest thinkers” we can’t just sit by and let this happen. Advertisers, get some fortitude! There are listeners out there who would respond with appreciation.
I would like to invite Leslie to consider doing a talk show from the Edge. People need to hear all view points. Heck, If the progessives, want I will sell them KGEZ.
Best Regards to All
