Friday, Dec. 14
"The Nutcracker" – Catch a showing of the quintessential holiday ballet story with Ballet Idaho’s interpretation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's popular yarn. Adult tickets are $19-$45, children tickets are $10-$35 for the performances through Dec. 16 at the Velma V. Morrison Center.
Saturday, Dec. 15
Ice Skating – Idaho Ice World is holding two events Saturday, one of which is bound to tickle a skater’s fancy. Holiday Skate from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. is an afternoon of skating to holiday music. The $7 admission for adults or $5 for seniors and children includes skate rental and benefits the Boise Parks & Recreation's AdVenture program. Also, the Holiday Festival on Ice is a skating show featuring the Boise Figure Skating Club and Boise Parks & Recreation Learn to Skate students. $3, $1 for children for shows at 3 and 6 p.m.
Christmas in the Nighttime Sky Fireworks – A special holiday light show with 20,000-shell fireworks erupting in sync with holiday music. Food sales will benefit the American Heart Association and admission, one unwrapped toy per family, will benefit Toys for Tots. Fireworks begin at 6:30 at Boise Hawks Memorial Stadium at the Expo Idaho.
Tuesday, Dec. 18
Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons – The popular and constantly touring rock-jam band, one of several projects by Jerry Joseph himself, is hitting up the Neurolux again. Show is 21 and older, tickets are $8.

What’s Happening Around BoiseSaturday, Dec. 8
Claus 'n' Paws – Animals, kids and Santa, what could be cuter? It’s Zoo Boise’s holiday fete with music, cocoa and other activities all day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Zoo Boise in Julia Davis Park. $5.25, $2.75 for children 4-11 and free for kids younger than 3.
Tool – The experimental, heavy-rock band from Los Angeles is coming to Boise to promote the new album. Catch them at 8 p.m. at the Idaho Center. Tickets are $39.50 and $49.50.
Monday, Dec. 10
Teacher-Astronaut Barbara Morgan – The McCall school teacher who became an astronaut and flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavor this past summer will speak to Boiseans at this free presentation. Tickets are required and must be picked up in person at the Discovery Center prior to the speech on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts at Boise State University.

Monday, Oct. 29
Take Back the Night – The highlight of the annual event will surely be singer-songwriter Katie Sawicki, who earlier this month headed out from New York on a national tour to promote her new record to be released early 2008. The show is at College of Idaho, recently renamed from Albertson College of Idaho, but it is open to the public and worth the trip to Caldwell.
Tuesday, Oct. 30
James Taylor – Legendary Sweet Baby James is rocking out at the Idaho Center. Past JT experience indicates that there will not be a lot of headbanging but the show will be lively, chock full of classic favorites, and a satisfying way to spend $55 to $75. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. in Nampa.

What’s Happening Around BoiseSaturday, Oct. 6
Meridian Chili Cook-Off – It’s getting cold outside, which is perfect time for a hot bowl of chili. Starting at noon, 11 local businesses will fight for the “Best Chili” title in the 14th annual fundraiser. Food is served in the parking lot of the Chapel of the Chimes. $5 gets you bowls of all 11 chilis. It’s $4 for seniors and children 6-12, free for ages younger than 5. Last year there was no vegetarian chili – so if you don’t do meat, expect to fill up on Fritos and saltines.
See Spot Walk – Idaho’s largest community dog walk is in its 16th year. The fundraiser benefits the Idaho Humane Society. Participants earn prizes for the amounts of cash they rake in, but all families and dogs are welcome to walk with the group through downtown Boise and participate in all the other activities during the celebration, including dog contests for best singer, best hair and best costume. Registration is $15 for kids, $20 for adults.
Oktoberfest in the Garden — October, the traditional month of beer and German grub, and no place in Boise can resist the urge to host their own Oktoberfest, not even the Idaho Botanical Garden. Check it out for more than the beer – for all the culture that comes with the suds, including music by the Edelweiss Band, folk dancing and traditional food like brats. The fun begins at 5 p.m. and costs $6 or $4 for members and kids 4-12.
Sunday, Oct. 7
Sum 41 – The popular Canadian punk rockers from 2001 are back with a new album. Last time they were in town they brought chicks from the audience to make out on stage. That was years ago; they are all grown up now, the lead singer is married to fellow Canadian chanteuse Avril Lavigne and their new album, “Underclass Hero” has a picture of said lead singer spitting. See them for $20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Big Easy.

Columbus Day – Don’t go to work or have a parade or protest it or whatever.

What’s Happening Around BoiseFriday, Sept. 7
Art in the Park – The Boise Art Museum’s annual festival of art and artisans of all media takes over Julia Davis Park with more than 250 booths including food and vendors and kids activities. BAM is also open for free during the weekend-long celebration. All day from Friday through Sunday.
Jazz on The Grove – A party kind of like the weekly summer concert series Alive After 5, but instead of rock, jam or bluegrass bands, it’s just jazz. Sandon Mayhew Group and The Bad Plus perform for free on The Grove from 5 to 10 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 10
The Beyoncé Experience – Finally! Boiseans will get to see Beyonce in all her real live bootylicousness. We ARE ready for this jelly. If you are crazy in love with the former Destiny’s Child, you can pick up tickets on eBay for a mere $330. Or see if Select-a-Seat has any left. The show at the Taco Bell Arena begins at 7 p.m.

Chess at the Library – Every Tuesday chess lessons begin at 6 p.m. So if you don’t know your rook from you bishop, head to the Garden City Library for the basics on one of the most popular board games in the world. And stay for open play co-sponsored by eXtreme Chess. It’s free and all ages are welcome.

REO Speedwagon – Seriously, I can’t fight this feeling anymore: I have been bouncing off the walls about this concert all summer, ever since I first heard that my favorite power ballad rockers were going Back on the Road Again to promote their new album, “Find Your Own Way Home.” The best part? The show is at the Western Idaho Fair, and it is free with admission to the fair. When the concert is all over and you Speedwagon boys Take it on the Run and head out of Boise, you can be sure that you’ll have made my summer and that I’m Gonna Keep on Loving You until you come back to town. Show starts at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 25
Tour de Fat – Don’t get a BUI during the community bike ride and festival at Julia Davis Park that is sponsored by New Belgium Brewery. With concerts, zany sideshow acts, people in wild costumes, all kinds of activities, and tons of beer, the Tour is actually a program on environmental sustainability and a benefit for the Treasure Valley Cycling Alliance and the Southwest Idaho Mountain Biking Association. The big ride starts at 11 a.m. but festivities last until 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 29
Alive After Five – The Gourds are coming, the Gourds are coming! As if AA5 was not a fun enough event with the city’s best people watching, flirting and fountain swimming, this week’s free entertainment is the best kinda-hillbilly, kinda-smartass quintet from Texas that ever played a free show in downtown Boise. Yeah, and it’s FREE from 5 to 8 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 30
Great Garden Escape Concert Series – Bring a picnic, bring a blanket, bring a box of wine and head out to the Idaho Botanical Garden before the summer is over for the Thursday night concert series, this time featuring music by once-local jazz singer John Nemeth. There are also vendors on site amid the blooms with food and drink for sale if the tuna sandwich you brought doesn’t look so hot when you get there. It costs $9 to get in but Botanical Garden members are only $7.

Yellow Pine Harmonica Festival – The incredible swelling town: The Yellow Pine Harmonica Fest turns the tiny mountain ville (population 40) into a bustling metropolis of music with harp players blowing out everything from blues to bluegrass and in all between. It’s a weekend-long event with vendors, musicians, artists, food, and campers.
Saturday, August 4
Soul Food Extravaganza – Get your fix of all the Southern comfort food you can handle with fried chicken, catfish, collard greens, cornbread, rice and beans, and more. There’s also music, crafts and vendors. The event was established almost 15 years ago to raise awareness of the African-American culture in the Treasure Valley. What started out as a small community picnic has turned into a full-fledged celebration. The festivities are 12 to 8 p.m. in Julia Davis Park.

Alive After Five — Nothing like hanging out at AA5 in The Grove in the heart of downtown Boise. Eat, imbibe, flirt, run through the fountain, or just watch the zany dancers. It’s free from 5 to 8 p.m. This week’s musical performer is Dale Watson.

Lakeside Lavender Festival — Pick your own lavender on a lakeside farm. The festival has beautiful and tranquil fields of purple shrubs and products and crafts to peruse, food, music, and more. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Lakeside Lavender Farm in Nampa.
Sunday, July 8
Tour de Boise — There are only 1,000 riders allowed to enter this Boise Coop-sponsored bike tour with 15- and 30-mile courses available. Cost is $40 but there’s no day-of registration so hurry if you still want to join the fun that includes a French luncheon, wine tasting, and a Tour De Boise T-Shirt. Events begin at 8 a.m. at the St. Luke’s Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Services parking lot
Galactic — The New Orleans-based funk-jazz-rock quintet hits up Boise to hype up their upcoming record “From the Corner to the Block” p.m. The show’s at 7:30 p.m. at the Big Easy Concert House, and tickets are $20 or $22.50 at the door.
