Simple Luxury in the Big Sky

Eager to escape the week’s workload and to celebrate our wedding anniversary, my husband, Mark, and I pull into the long driveway that delivers us to the doorstep of Steve Gamble’s Gallatin River Lodge. A rustic fishing and hunting lodge from the outside, complete with pond, mountain views, and deer foraging in the meadow (did I hear someone yell “cue the deer?”), the Gallatin River Lodge is anything but rustic on the inside. This little luxury inn sits on 350 acres just 15 minutes from downtown Bozeman.

A Jewel in the Rough: Three Perfect Days at The Bentwood Inn in Jackson Hole

Autumn is a great time to visit Jackson Hole and Teton National Park in Wyoming. Most of the summer tourists have gone home, things move at a slower pace, and the National Elk Refuge begins to stir with wildlife descending from the mountains into the vast 25,000 acre meadow.

Family Fun in Montana

Pick-Your-Own Farms in Montana: Orchards, Pumpkin Patches and More!

In search of pick-your-own farms within reasonable driving distance from Missoula, I came up with a list of several farms, orchards and pumpkin patches in Montana, many of them family-owned. Some are full blown operations complete with retail shops and activities for the kids, while others are a little less assuming. Some have short seasons and are open for a very limited time. It’s always a good idea to call ahead to make sure someone will be there to show you around and lead you to the goodies!

Celebrate Autumn with Local Wine Tasting and Regional Festivals

Autumn is the best time of year for wine lovers, with new wine releases and a variety of festivals and wine tastings across the West. Late summer gives way to cool evenings, flavorful harvests, and hints at the upcoming holidays. Missoula and the surrounding valley offers several choices for stomping, swishing, and spitting - if you must. Spend an hour at one or spend a day touring them all!

A Slice of Bavaria in British Columbia

Road trip anyone? Yes, gas is expensive, but sometimes the lure of some extended time behind the wheel and some good company is all it takes to get me to pack a bag. So, on a recent weekend, my husband and I had 48 hours to indulge in a little R & R – a weekend of soccer, schnitzel, and sightseeing. We drove five hours north to Kimberley, British Columbia, the “Bavarian City of the Rockies” and the highest little city in Canada at over 3,600 feet.

Colorado Wine Country in the Grand Valley

When it comes to domestic wine, we often think of California, Washington, and Oregon as producers of some of the best. Grand Junction, Colorado is fast becoming one of the country’s premier regions for winemaking.
