16 Questions for Bozeman’s JC Auto

By Colin Hickey, 3-08-07

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Bozeman’s JC Auto, who are playing in Ennis Friday night and at Bozeman’s Filling Station on Saturday.  I’ve been a fan of the band for many years but there were some questions that needed answering.

Q: How long has JC Auto been around?
A: 5 years strong

Q: How many ex members do you have?
A: 2 ex-members (check out my brothers’ new band, The Issue)

Q:  How many songs could you play right now as a band?
A: 30+

Q: What’s the state of the punk rawk and roll scene in Bozeman?
A: Bozeman has been really good for us. We have managed to keep it real so to speak. There are maybe 5 punk bands in Bozeman. So we have a great relationship with all styles of bands here. Lots of styles come together to play shows it has worked well so far.

Q: Favorite drink and shot for the stage?
A: Tequilla, PBR, Jager, basically what ever they’re buying…

Q: What is the drunkest thing every yelled at you on stage?
A: I can’t really remember some of the things Richie Rowe would yell at us on stage at Jay’s Upstairs.
(Richie Rowe was a bartender at Missoula’s infamous Jay’s Upstairs before it closed.)

Q: Who would you open up for if you could choose any band dead or alive?
A: If I (James) could choose it would be the Stones, U2 or Guns ‘N’ Roses. Those are 3 bands that have done wonders in the biz on every level in my opinion.

Q: You guys cover a Pixies song what is your favorite Pixies album?
A: That’s a tough one. For me (James) it would be Bosa Nova. I know. I’m a poser.

Q: Follow up question: Kim Deal the bass player for the Pixies is wicked hot. What female musician would you put up against her in hot rawkness?
A: Doro Pesch (James), D’arcy of Smashing Pumpkins (Tracy), Brody of The Distillers (Drunkpunk).
(Wrong no one is hotter than Kim Deal.)

Q: You have a female drummer and she kicks ass. How come girls are so good at hitting on things?
A: No answer.

Q: You (James) have a F’ing lot of tattoos which is your favorite and why?
A: My favorite is my John Belushi cause it something I’ve never seen before.

Q: What are some other good local Bozeman bands?
A: VFB! (old school punk), Mudgett (metal), The Dirty Shame(country)

Q: You are recording in Hollywood CA in April what’s up with that?
A: Well we are going to record at Westbeach (Sublime, Rancid, Bad Religion, NOFX, etc...) We asked and they said yes. Some people would like to keep Montana a secret.  In a sense Ted Kezinsky had the right idea???

Q: In my three years of booking Jay’s Upstairs in Missoula you played there a crap ton of times. What’s your favorite non incriminating Jay’s moment?
A: Your birthday bash with Sweet JAP was a blast. Also I (James) really enjoyed smashing a guitar closing night during The Reptile Dysfunction’s set.

Q: If you could put anything on your show rider what would it be besides a boat load of money?
A:  Peace on earth and a carton of camel lights

Q: A boy ate 100 cookies in five days. Each day he ate 6 more than the day before. How many cookies did he eat on the first day?
A: That’s a good one. I dropped my pda phone in the toilet so I can’t do the calculations…
(That was the answer I was looking for.)

Well if you want to know more about JC Auto come see them live.  They are playing at the Claim Jumper in Ennis on March 9th and The Filler in Bozeman MT on the 10th.  To hear some music check out their myspace page.
