Bush Visit Makes Big Headlines

By Lucy Burningham, 8-23-05

The Commander-in-Chief doesn’t make it to Utah all that often, so when he does, especially to defend growing opposition to an ongoing war, you can expect big headlines. Yesterday’s coverage of the President’s visit wasn’t limited to local media, as National Public Radio mentioned the event in top of the hour headlines all day long, and the LA Times sent a staff writer to cover the speech.

Locally, what Bush said about the Iraq war was as equally important as what was going on at Pioneer Park, where anti-administration protestors and veterans exchanged words and Utah’s largest protest (about 2,000 people) took full form. Mayor Rocky Anderson, who received criticism for encouraging Utahns to attend the protest, spoke at the event, and later told Tribune reporter Holly Mullen that he doesn’t think an immediate pullout in Iraq is the answer.

For some great sound bytes, check out KUER’s story, and for protest pictures that were widely circulated on the web yesterday, visit liberal blog DailyKos.
