Forest Grove Fire Daily Update: Sept. 6

By Lolo National Forest Fire Information, Guest Writer, 9-06-07

Firefighters are continuing mop-up operations of the Forest Grove Fire and they expect to have the fire contained later today. The fire has not spread outside of its perimeter except for some spotting over the last few days, and crews have been successful in containing those spots. The fire remains at 300 acres. Mop-up will include looking for hot spots and extinguishing them inside the perimeter of the fire.

Crews have already mopped-up within 100 feet inside the perimeter of the fire and have laid hose line on some portions of the fire perimeter to douse hot spots and respond to spotting as needed. Cooler temperatures have aided firefighters over the last several days. The fire started Sunday afternoon and quickly spread in timber and slash. Crews and dozer operators worked through the night to build fire line and by Monday the entire perimeter was lined. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

The fire is near the Quartz Flat Campground off of Interstate 90, about 25 miles southeast of St. Regis. There are no structures threatened by the fire and a Type III organization from the Lolo National Forest is managing the fire. Traffic on Interstate 90 is not restricted because of the fire, though the Forest Grove boat launch near interstate 90 is closed for public safety.

Resources currently on the fire include:
Four crews (including two Type I crews)
One dozer
Six engines
