Get Cultural, and Spiritual, This Month in Alamosa
By Tonya Poole, 3-08-06
Few things are more powerful in combination than dance and community. Add spirituality, food and the pursuit of peace to the mix, and you’ve got the ingredients for a very special event. This month Alamosa hosts the internationally-popular Dances of Universal Peace – an event inspired by the traditions of tribal and village cultures to renew a connection with the earth and cosmos through ritual celebration. Dance leaders Sky Majida from Durango and Stuart Allen from Crestone will be present for the event.
Pre-dating modern music, art and dance therapy trends, the Dances of Universal Peace – a blend of movement, music and medication – has grown tremendously and is now practiced worldwide in countries like New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia. The event’s birth in the late 1960s by Samuel L. Lewis in San Francisco signaled a call for peace worldwide and a desire to create a stronger sense of community, and unity, for participants of all faiths and backgrounds.
Through simple movements and song, participants tap into the essence and wisdom of the earth and the world’s traditions, seeking to experience the reality of unity through diversity. Movements are performed in a circle and combined with short lyrics, both meditative and celebratory, along with live music to create an uplifting atmosphere – strengthening the bond between participants and each other, their communities, and the world around them.
In the spirit of joy, peace and thanksgiving, local organizers invite everyone in the community to come out and join them for an afternoon and evening of enchantment and community enrichment. No dance experience necessary!
