America's Obesity Problem

It’s Hard to Be Fat in the West

By Richard Martin, 8-28-07

Apparently the impression you get from strolling the Boulder Creek Path on any typical morning – that everyone who lives here is in great shape – is not so far off. According to the non-profit Trust for America's Health, Coloradoans are the leanest Americans by state. The Trust's new report on obesity, released on Monday and based on federal statistics, says that the rate of obesity in Colorado is 17.6 percent.

Mississippi tipped the scales as the fattest state in the country for the third year in a row, with 30.6 percent of adults classified as obese. As you might expect, 10 of the 15 states with the highest rates of obesity among adults were in the South, as were eight of the 10 states with the highest rates of overweight youth.

In general, residents of the Rocky Mountain West are less weighty than in other regions, with Montana (20.7 percent) at 45th in the fatso rankings, Utah (21.1 percent) 44th, New Mexico (22 percent) 42nd, Wyoming (22.8 percent) 35th, and Idaho (23.2 percent) 31st.
