More Inconvenient Truth
By bikeboy, Unfiltered 2-26-07
Last night in Tinseltown, homage was paid to Al Gore for his tireless efforts to shed light on the Inconvenient Truth... that the Earth is warming, and our warm-living ways are to blame.
All the correct things were said, and he was awarded an Oscar for his documentary on the topic.
Strangely, in Hollywood, and apparently among the Algore Faithful, what you SAY is far more important than what you DO.
It's always been fairly obvious that Algore didn't follow his own advice - to live in a way that minimizes one's "carbon footprint." After all, he private-jets here and there to get the word out... and I doubt he uses a bicycle for his ground transportation. (In fact, based on his appearance at the Oscar ceremony, it looks like he's kinda gone "couch potato" on us.)
Now there are some numbers that you can wrap your arms around. It turns out that Algore uses about 20 times as much energy at his fancy Nashville digs, as the typical American household. According to the Tennesee Center for Policy Research, Algore's monthly electricity usage is 18,400 kWh, compared with the American average of 10,656 kWh per year. Algore's combined electricity and gas bills amount to more than $30,000 per year. Here is a link to more specific information.
Imagine what the power bill would be if he spent more time at home, instead of traveling around our pretty blue planet, lecturing the rest of us on what we ought to be doing!

The story was a smear against Gore, and was completely unjustified.
(I checked out that blog link. Evidently there's no dispute that Algore spends $30k per year on electricity and gas... but his defenders say he's not getting as good a deal as implied by his detractors. How can the man stand there with his trademark "straight face" and lecture people on their energy-consuming ways?)
Give me an honest answer to this question: If everybody's energy-consumption habits were the same as Al Gore's, would the world be better-off environmentally, or worse-off?
I'm saying the original story is a lie. It's a made-up smear.
Now, that report about Algore's wasteful ways probably had plenty of "spin" on it, and may very well have distorted the facts, just as you assert.
But, c'mon! This man spends $30,000 a year on electricity and gas for his mansion! No matter how you cut it (and I'd love to see his kWh's burned; he oughtta disclose them if it's been so distorted) that is a LOT of energy use for the undisputed leader of the conservation movement! To me, that seems a bit like the preacher who rants against gays, and then it turns out he IS one, when he's not presenting his lecture!
