Powder Day at Tamarack: Steep and Deep

By Joe Prebich, 1-18-06

I was going to write this last night, but I didn’t want anyone to steal my powder! So for everyone at work today, you missed out. Donnelly, ID was hit with about 25 inches of fresh last night and the riding was amazing. Normally on a powder day you are fighting for first lift and your best bet is three runs before it is tracked out. But not in Idaho, nope, the powder just sits there. We rolled up to the Tamarack, located just outside of Donnelly, ID, just as the clouds cracked revealing a bluebird sky that hadn’t been seen for days because of all the snow. Amazingly the parking lot was empty, not a lift line in sight, but there was plenty of fresh powder.

It isn’t often that a powder day will actually last you all day. Usually the morning is good but by noon, it is tracked out and moguled. But when you are riding a lift with no one else around you, then the powder will out last your legs. Each run was steep and deep, throwing slashes to the wind lips and powder stashes. From cliff drops to cornice drops, open bowl turns to straight-down-the-run powder turns; today was a very good day.

I suppose I should apologize for not putting the word out about this storm earlier, (we knew that it was going to be a big one way before it hit!) but then you would have skipped work or school or wherever it is that your time is spent and slashed my powder stash. But I do feel a bit bad about it, so here’s a heads up, there is plenty more powder just waiting to be torn up at Tamarack and you can bet that I’ll be up there tomorrow too!

From the Trailer,
Joe
