Miffed at Mitt

Romney’s Porno Problem

By Tracy Medley, 7-05-07

Like John Edwards and his $1200 haircut, Mitt Romney’s got himself a new non-problem problem. It seems that some “conservative groups” are miffed that Mitt hasn’t done more to nix on-demand porn from Marriott Hotel rooms.

Romney, a longtime Marriott board member has of course publicly decried the perils of porno – but continues to profit from its (probably awesome) consumption in Marriott hotel rooms across the globe.

Phil Burress, who is president of Citizens for Community Values gave me my hardiest laugh of the day when he told Glen Johnson of the Associate Press, “Marriott is a major pornographer. And even though he may have fought it, everyone on that board is a hypocrite for presenting themselves as family values when their hotels offer 70 different types of hardcore pornography.”

First of all – are there really 70 different types of hardcore pornography? If so I need to get out – or perhaps stay in more.

My naiveté aside, Mr. Burress’ accusation of hypocrisy is weak. If Americans know anything about hypocrisy it’s this: he who smelt it probably dealt it. Or so my little brother would say.

Perhaps Romney isn’t so concerned with what other Americans do or watch in their hotel rooms because he understands the fundamental principles of freedom, democracy and the American right to watch Kinky Kong if we want to.

More than that – Romney is a businessman – a good businessman. Surely Burress and friends have heard that “sex sells.” According to The Salt Lake Tribune the hotel industry on average rakes in around $500 million per year in on-demand porn sales.

Roger Conner, a Marriott spokesman told the Associated Press concerning Romney’s lack of porno-boat rocking, “It certainly would have been wrong to impose his own personal beliefs if they were contrary to the financial interests of the company.”

Romney defended himself saying, “I am not pursuing an effort to try and stop adults from being able to acquire or see things that I find objectionable; that’s their right. But I do vehemently oppose practices or business procedures that will allow kids to be exposed to obscenity,”
