The Amgen Tour of California Wheels Through San Luis Obispo
By Special Advertiser, 2-01-08
The SLO Life gets a little faster as the Amgen Tour of California wheels through Downtown San Luis Obispo in February.
For the third year in a row, the city of San Luis Obispo will serve as the finishing city for the fourth stage of the Amgen Tour of California. The Tour rolls through downtown on Thursday, February 21, just in time for the weekly Farmers’ Market. As thousands of cycling fans crowd the streets waiting to catch a glimpse of their favorite riders, the city does its best to offer a little something for everyone to do and see after the race.
San Luis Obispo, or SLO as the locals refer to it, enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, which lends itself to outdoor activities and events nearly year round. Biking and hiking trails can be found around the beautiful neighboring hills.
The Downtown area is full of shops, restaurants and cafés that bring families and couples alike to stroll along the creek-side paths to their next destination.
The fertile soils of the area lend themselves to the burgeoning wine region. Rows of vineyard grapes line the countryside, giving visitors an unexpected alternative to the anticipated “beach-bum” atmosphere. You can get a sampling of up to 72 different wines from producers in San Luis Obispo’s Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande, Avila Beach and Nipomo Regions at the downtown wine bar simply called Taste.
Complimenting the natural beauty of the city, San Luis Obispo also supports the beauty of the arts.
The first Friday of every month is San Luis Obispo’s Art After Dark where downtown art galleries open late to show off their latest exhibits. The state-of-the-art Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center is home to a magnificent pipe organ built on the same grand scale as the instruments that grace cathedrals and concert halls in the world’s largest cities. The Center also draws in performance groups from around the world and across the nation and serves as the main venue for San Luis Obispo Symphony performances, the Summer Mozart Festival and Cal Poly Arts presentations.
With flights connecting Utah residents to California’s Central Coast in under two hours, it’s hard to find a reason not to experience the SLO Life!
