The Return of Sebadoh: Albuquerque, Boulder
By Colin Hickey, 3-14-07
In the late 80’s Dinosaur Jr was one of the biggest indie rock bands out there. They were put at the top of the indie pedestal with bands like Sonic Youth, Husker Du and Big Black. However J Mascis (lead vocals and guitar) and Lou Barlow (bass guitar) didn’t always see eye to eye. After Lou put out a cassette of his side project called Sebadoh in 1989 he was fired from Dinosaur Jr.
Sebadoh was different then Dinosaur Jr—much more quiet and folkier—and is now known for being the pioneer for the lo-fi music movement. Bands that would soon follow their footsteps would be Pavement, Guided by Voices and hundreds of others. Lou Barlow was asked about his new music by Mojo magazine once and his reply was “I knew I was on the right track, when people said I was a ‘pussy’ for playing an acoustic guitar. I’d found my new passion: quiet was the new loud.” The band lasted for ten years and put out around ten albums.
Through the years the lineup of Sebadoh changed a couple times. Original drummer Eric Gaffney left the band in 1993 and was replaced a couple times. Well now the original lineup is back together for the first time in 14 years and they are going on tour. I highly suggest checking this show out if they come to your town.
See Sebadoh live on Friday March 16th at the Launchpad in Albuquerque or Saturday March 17th at the Fox Theater in Boulder.
