Here Comes Fall
Cold nights have the water temperature dropping and the fishing improving. As we move further into September, look for hatch intensity and diversity to gain momentum. September and October are 2 of the very best months to fish the Missoula area! [more]
Dog Days of Summer
Lots of hot weather have the rivers running warm, low and with heavy Fish Wildlife and Parks Department restrictions in place. As we head toward summer, the colder nights will have water temperatures falling and the fish looking up again. The morning fishing is still pretty good. [more]

The Kingfisher Fly Shop’s 5-River Fishing ReportHere comes the liquid snow! High water is getting a bit of an early start this year or at least it's thinking about an early start. Either way, the Missoula area rivers will be out of commission for about 4 to 6 weeks at this point. Rock Creek will come alive once the salmonflies get to popping, but this year, it'll be mostly a boat deal up here. [more]

The area rivers are big time on the drop with the cold nights and lack of rain. It'll just be a matter of how much water hits the rivers with the warm weather on tap for the rest of the week. Even if we get some more low elevation melt off, if the rain lets up for a week or two, we're in for some very good pre-runoff fishing in the next week or two. [more]

Another Push of Goo!The water saturated ground isn't able to hold ANY rain at this point. Even moderate sprinkles are hitting the rivers and keeping flows off balance. The will need to be a few days of no rain to get the rivers fishing again. [more]

Amazingly Mundane Yet Highly Uninteresting April Montana FishingThe April fishing has so far been lackluster due to high and off color rivers. While the beginning of the month started off well, the last week or so has been tough. Look for conditions to improve dramatically when the rivers drop and clear a bit more. We're still due, statistically, for some amazing pre-runoff fishing. [more]

And They’re Off …With the last blast of warmer weather, the main hatch of skwalas has finally begun most of the area rivers. We're seeing good numbers of bugs on most of the waters these days and a widening window of dryfly action. It should be good stuff from here on into high water the middle of May. [more]

Close But No CigarNymphing on several of the local rivers has been decent, but the much anticipated skwala madness is being held in check by somewhat colder than normal March temperatures. Once we get a few days of even slightly warmer weather, expect things to happen in a hurry! [more]

They’re Here! The first of the skwalas have appeared on the Clark Fork through town. Looks like we're hopping the train to dryfly central; a trip that'll last until mid November! [more]
