Honey! look! an animation festival... better lock up the kids

Spike and Mike’s Twisted Animation Festival Visits Missoula

Spike and Mike’s Twisted Animation Festival is not for the weak of heart (or stomach). After I finished the 90-straight minutes of animation I was desensitized to everything around me. Some one could have come up and kicked me right it the groin and I wouldn’t have noticed. I can’t remember in what part of the movie I stopped having feeling. Was it the part when the little chicken ate the magic mushrooms and had sex with a horse? Or was it the 11-minute-long street fight with zombie mothers' stomachs exploding and little zombies jumping out only to get kicked in the face and explode into a pool of blood? I just can’t remember anymore.

If you are a fan of Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network then this festival is for you. Imagine Adult Swim but with lots of nudity and more gore. I’m a fan of animation and I actually really liked this movie but it really is hard to take at times. The festival started in 1990 as a place for showcasing short animated pieces that were just too naughty for the mainstream. Animation giants like South Park, Beavis and Butthead, Powerpuff Girls and Celebrity Death Match all got their start at this festival.

Spike and Mike’s Twisted Animation Festival will be at the Crystal Theater in Missoula from March 27th to April 1st. It will cost you a couple bucks but for me, it's totally worth it. Does that make me a bad person? [more]

The Return of Sebadoh: Albuquerque, Boulder

In the late '80s Dinosaur Jr was one of the biggest indie rock bands out there. They were put at the top of the indie pedestal with bands like Sonic Youth, Husker Du and Big Black. However J Mascis (lead vocals and guitar) and Lou Barlow (bass guitar) didn’t always see eye to eye. After Lou put out a cassette of his side project called Sebadoh in 1989 he was fired from Dinosaur Jr.

Sebadoh was different then Dinosaur Jr -- much more quiet and folkier -- and is now known for being the pioneer for the lo-fi music movement. Bands that would soon follow their footsteps would be Pavement, Guided by Voices and hundreds of others. Lou Barlow was asked about his new music by Mojo magazine once and his reply was “I knew I was on the right track, when people said I was a ‘pussy’ for playing an acoustic guitar. I’d found my new passion: quiet was the new loud.” The band lasted for ten years and put out around ten albums.

Sebadoh is playing on Friday March 16th at the Launchpad in Albuquerque or Saturday March 17th at the Fox Theater in Boulder. [more]

Local Music Sound Off

Listen: Missoula’s Ryan Bundy Has Nothing to Hide

This week's featured local musician is Ryan Bundy, a singer/songwriter from Homer Alaska who now calls Montana his home. Ryan's music is stripped down bluesy folk that reminds me of early Bob Dylan and I like Bob Dylan so that is a definite compliment. Singer/songwriters have a tough job because it's just them, a guitar and their words up there on stage. They don't have the luxury of hiding behind drum and guitar solos like some of us.

Ryan Bundy doesn't need to hide behind any of those things. Great story telling and guitar playing make his new album Stay the Storm a must listen.

Click here to listen to Track 3 on his new album, "Ballad of Brown."

Ryan is throwing a CD Release Party at the Crystal Theatre on March 10th. Show starts around 7:30.

16 Questions for Bozeman’s JC Auto

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Bozeman’s JC Auto, who are playing in Ennis Friday night and at Bozeman's Filling Station on Saturday. I’ve been a fan of the band for many years but there were some questions that needed answering.

Q: How long has JC Auto been around?
A: 5 years strong

Q: What’s the state of the punk rawk and roll scene in Bozeman?
A: Bozeman has been really good for us. We have managed to keep it real so to speak. There are maybe 5 punk bands in Bozeman. So we have a great relationship with all styles of bands here. Lots of styles come together to play shows it has worked well so far. [more]

Let Zechs Marquise Take You For a Ride

In a perfect world, my first experience of seeing the El Paso band Zechs Marquise would go something like this: I would be going for a cocktail after work on a Wednesday night and I would hear this crazy psychedelic music coming from this seedy underground bar that I never had the balls to go into before. Interview: 16 Questions for Billings’ 1090 Club

The 1090 Club is a Montana indie rawk band from Billings. Recently, I asked band members some questions via the interweb. Here’s what they had to say.

Q. From my knowledge a 1090 is a mullet. Is the band really named after a hairdo? Why not the crewcut club?
A: Yes its true, it started as a joke. HA! The crewcut club sounds like the cutting crew. Plus we see more mullets than crews here in Billings. [more]

The Pharcyde at The Boulder Theater

Hands down The Pharcyde’s song Passin Me By is my favorite rap song on all time. Yeah I said it and I stand by my story. I was in high school and I had just got dumped by my first love. Remember when Brenda got dumped by Dylan on 90210 and all she did was listen to REM’s "Losing My Religion" all the time? I did the same thing with Passin Me By. I knew what Brenda was going through and I felt her pain. [more]
