Secret Lives Of Gay Republicans

I don't know Larry Craig personally. I've never met the guy. Before yesterday, he was just another U.S. Senator. Today, he is just another sad example of what has become of my political party's tragic relationship with sexuality.

As everyone from Boise to Buffalo knows by now, Craig - a Republican from Idaho - recently pled guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct stemming from an encounter he had with an undercover police officer in the Minneapolis airport bathroom.

Already, party leaders have temporarily pushed him from senior committee posts, including his position as ranking member on the Veterans Affairs Committee. Many in the Republican Party are calling for him to resign. But should social outrage be enough to end a political career? In this case, maybe and maybe not.

Save The Males! Stand Up For The Much Maligned Man

It takes a lot for me to put a bumper sticker on my car. With the exception of the occasional political candidate, I haven't given into the temptation since college. That is, until this summer, when I revealed one of my most strongly held political views.

The sticker says it all, in big bold letters: "SAVE THE MALES."

Hollywood’s Making Of The Green “Celebritician”

If you are a decent-looking Democrat looking to make it big with Hollywood donors, you've got to undertake one simple task: Create a plan to save the world from humankind's devastating environmental impact.

Former Vice President Al Gore has headlined the trend with his film "An Inconvenient Trut." John Kerry, similarly tried to be seen as a "green" candidate in 2004.

Stars responded to "celebriticians" like Gore and Kerry by ditching their gas-guzzling Hummers in exchange for more fuel-efficient hybrid sedans. They started replacing their Evian plastic water bottles with glass-bottled Voss, and even installed energy-efficient windows throughout their 10,000-square-foot Beverly Hills mansions.

While it's fun to mock Hollywood, we cannot escape a more serious inquiry into how effective each of our efforts will be in fighting environmental decay -- especially in an era when we face a new global world complete with its own set of unknown variables.

In Search Of A Presidential Candidate Who Will “Just Say No”

Hillary or Obama? Mitt or Rudy? The candidates are spending millions to distinguish themselves from each other. Except on the Drug War, where they remain united in their silence about our country’s continued flawed approach toward drug treatment and prohibition.

On every major presidential candidate’s campaign Web site, you’ll find their policy positions on diverse issues ranging from the war in Iraq to mortgage fraud. You will not find, however, a single reference to the Drug War by front-runners, including U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

We simply cannot have an honest debate about America’s social ills without first acknowledging our serious drug problems.

Promoting Gender Gap Doesn’t Resonate With Young Female Voters

Maybe it’s my western heritage—my great-great-grandmother was born on the Oregon Trail and competed against men in Nevada saddle bronc competitions. Women in my family don’t turn to the government in the search for equality. We take such matters into our own hands.

It’s a freedom never realized by today’s liberal female leaders. According to Colorado Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, one of six female senate presidents nationally, women are still oppressed. “There is still an old-boys network and it’s real,” she recently lamented to reporters.

Oh, really, Madam President, because last time I checked, a girl is running the show.

Voter ID System: Bad Deal For Good Politics

I asked a consultant friend to look up my identification with a GOP database.

It was scary how much the GOP knew about me. I'm a pro-life, twenty-something Republican. This they had right. But what was written next to these identifying characteristics couldn't be further than the truth. The system identified me as "Buchanan Republican." With all due respect, the divisive Buchanan would be my last choice for president.

The voter ID system (or the partisan volunteer operating it) must not have had room to record information about the other issues important in my life—like my passionate views in favor of ending the drug war or my support in backing measures to recognize the legitimacy of same-sex civil unions. Neither of these positions — which frequently help determine how I vote — are shared by Buchanan. [more]

Western Voters Treat Mormonism With Caution

Mitt Romney’s religion bothers me. But being bothered by religion in politics is not a new experience. I’m more troubled by agnostic candidates parading around as Christians in shallow vote-getting efforts. At least Romney’s honesty is refreshing. He’s a Mormon and he’s not going to hide his religion just to win a presidential primary.

While East Coast pundits are quick to discount Romney’s candidacy because of his religion, his prospects may play out differently in the West, where Mormonism thrives and religious tolerance is being tested in a way rarely seen here.
