When the Hypocrisy Show Fits

Outspoken politico Rev. Al Sharpton spent the day in Salt Lake City meeting with officials from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, learning about his own family history and probably eating crow- as my Grammy would say. Rev. Sharpton’s visit to Mo-town comes somewhat suspiciously on the heels of his less-than-tolerant remarks about presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Mormonism – a gaffe for which he immediately apologized…to “regular Mormons” anyway.

Voucher War

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has come out swinging on the hotly debated private school voucher issue, telling the Utah State Board of Education to implement the voucher program immediately. That is according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Despite widespread, public opposition to the state’s recently passed school voucher legislation, Shurtleff wants to rip off the band-aid, and quick. Here we go again

This is one of those stories that falls in the “Just in case you weren’t sick of talking about Mitt Romney’s religion” category - (psssst! He’s Mormon!) According to The Salt Lake Tribune Romney, who lets face it, is probably pretty sick of talking about his LDS-ocity himself had to jockey questions about the LDS Church’s polygamous history during an appearance on CBS’ “60 Minutes” this weekend. Say What?

Uhh, what? Dean Cain is playing Joseph Smith in a movie and no one told me? While The Salt Lake Tribune is busy trifling over how that the upcoming Mountain Meadows Massacre centered flick, September Dawn might affect Mitt Romney’s presidential bid – I’m way more interested in bandying about thoughts of Dean “Beefcake” Cain (a.k.a. The worst Superman ever) depicting such a complicated and controversial Mormon icon on the big screen.

September Dawn’s plot is described this way by the Internet Movie Database, “A love story set during a tense encounter between a wagon train of settlers [who] face off against a renegade Mormon group.” As one of my 14-year-old nieces would say, “LOL.”

Representin' with Ralph - A Podcast

Salt Lake City Mayoral candidate Ralph Becker is a fixture in Utah politics, representing District 24 in the Utah State House of Representatives for over 10 years and currently serving as House Minority Leader. An outspoken Democrat, Becker has earned the respect of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle while standing his ground on issues such as the Energy Policy Act and his current bid to ban gifts to legislators from lobbyists.

I recently sat down with Mr. Becker at his campaign headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City. We discussed his decision to run for mayor and his thoughts on education, the Utah Transit Authority, and of course, Rocky Anderson.

Rocky Punch

Ding! Ding! The fight is on between Salt Lake City Mayor, liberal cause-celeb Rocky Anderson and right-wing-broken record Sean Hannity. Friday night, the two will verbally duke it out at the University of Utah’s Kingsbury Hall in front of a sold out audience…for charity (awwww).

Just so we’re clear – Kingsbury Hall seats around 2000 people and it sold out - in a matter of minutes. I have to say, that’s a lot of butts filling a lot of seats just to see a local hero/villain debate a mildly celebrated Fox News “haircut.”

The War at Home

According to the Deseret Morning News 20,000 guests are expected to attend Vice President Dick Cheney’s Brigham Young University commencement speech later this afternoon. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leaders are expected to meet with the Vice President shortly after he arrives.

At least three demonstrations opposing Cheney's visit are expected; including an alternative commencement hosted by BYU students featuring Ralph Nader. [more]
