Missoula Art Museum “Unwrapped”

With the new Missoula Art Museum wrapped up like a giant present Friday – a pink ribbon stretched from the sidewalk to its roof – it was like Christmas morning for many Missoula art enthusiasts who gathered to witness MAM’s grand opening.

“Unwrapped” was the theme of the celebration. Ten or so museum supporters, including former mayor Mike Kadas and Montana sculptor Rudy Autio, each took a snip of the lofty pink ribbon. As the doors opened, the damp crowd that had been huddling under tents and umbrellas flooded through the doors into the bright and warm galleries.

The inauguration was emceed by Martin Burke, a MAM board member. Among the attendees was former U.S. Rep. Pat Williams. His speech paid homage to artists who challenge the status quo. He said that artists are essential members of a thriving democracy, often being the decisive voice of dissent.

“Art can flourish without politicians,” said Williams, “the reverse is not true.”

Many artists were in attendance including Autio and Jaune Quick-To-See Smith. Both artists’ works are featured collections in the museum. Architect of the new building, Warren Hampton, was on hand as well.

Vivian Burke, who co-chaired the Renaissance Campaign, had a long list of praises for those who helped make the museum a reality. She was especially grateful for the government support both at a local and state level. Senator Conrad Burns and Mayor John Engen were unable to attend but sent letters of support. In Engen’s letter he wrote, “A good city fills its potholes. A great city makes sure that its souls are filled.”
