i think we're gonna win gallatin, we campaigned too hard in Bozeman, too lose the tester vote, the college kids made it to the polls today
Comment By Mark, 11-08-06G'night Courtney. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Comment By Jason, 11-08-06I can't believe that *anyone* would vote for that Burns scumbag. How stupid are you, America?
Comment By Barry Shanley, 11-08-06COURTNEY,...
As a 30-year reporter the significance of the Montana race you are writing about is how it will affect who runs the Senate. But, nowhere in your article do you say which candidate is from which party. It's not about the horse race but the effect of the results. It looks like you were in a terrible hurry when writing your story. Never assume your readers have the time to be totally aware of these things. It's a kind of reporter's arrogance.
This blog saved my life when the early Yellowstone numbers magically disappeared from the SOS website.
Thanks for the great coverage, Courtney.
Your all-night toil was not wasted on those of us Montana voters who are living overseas.
Does anyone know why there are no results from Meagher?
Comment By Courtney Lowery, 11-08-06Drew,
I'm glad I could help. And you just made my morning.
All Liberal Left Wing Secular Progressive Societies since the beginning of recorded time, have ALL! Imploded to minor or non existance. Has history taught us anything? Now whose stupid?
Comment By Courtney Lowery, 11-08-06Don,
I'm not sure. I'm waiting for someone at the Secretary of State's office to pick up this morning to ask. I'll let you know.
Your coverage rocks!! I can't tell you how much I appreciated the "moment by moment" coverage last night. I am out of town and thanks to you all, felt like I was right there in Montana! Great work!!!!
Comment By Craig Moore, 11-08-06The results have come in much as I had realistically expected. I found myself in somewhat of a blue mood. As usual I went out early to prepare my daughter's car for her to drive to school so she could fly out at the last second. (I think we are down to nano-seconds now.) As I was clearing the windows an Indian neighbor (India) walked by. She looked up at me in our driveway, smiled widely, waved, and said "Good Morning!" In that moment I found my personal clouds parted and I was basking in the warm glow of personal friendship. I returned the gesture and she walked away. I have no idea how she voted, or cared.
In this "morning after" as we greet each other let's start with a wave and a "Good morning." Tomorrow let's remember how this day started and realize how simple it is to take a giant step towards working together.
I can't believe you are the only person covering this race closely. The Senate hangs on this!! Thanks.
Comment By Sarah, 11-08-06I do not understand how anyone could vote for such a selfish, racist, hateful person like Burns. He only cares about himself and helping his George W. Bush buddies. Isn't it obvious he is a liar and thief, too. Everybody knows he was in deep with Abramoff and that scandal. How much more will Montana allow him to drive this wonderful state into the ground?
Comment By Patti, 11-08-06I can't believe you people would believe that Burns is selfish, or a racist--how long have you lived in Montana? Burns has done more for Montana than any other Senator--open up your eyes and look at the real things--don't believe the ads!!! Maybe you need to open your eyes and your heart--know about the real world not just what you think--get real!!!
Comment By Californiamontanacan, 11-08-06Well patti, he is Republican after all. Maybe you need to take your own advice... remember the "rag-head" comment?
Great coverage!
Just heard ABC ofificially called Tester the winner!!!! Yahoooooo
Comment By Me, 11-08-06Good thing ABC's official OPINION doesn't mean anything. Sure hope that Tester doesn't officially win because two college towns spoke for the whole state.
Comment By Californiamontanacan, 11-08-06Hey "ME" don't worry Bro...... Burns actually got 100% of the vote. This is all just a liberal media cover up as is all news that doesn't agree with you.
Stay in the right unless passing,
-Californiamontanacan
Yeah, you wouldn't want a bunch of informed, educated people making decisions, better leave that to the selfish ranchers and uneducated "traditionalists" of the eastern half of the state
Comment By Craig Moore, 11-08-06Assuming that ABC's prediction is correct, in order of priority, what should Tester's top 5 issues be and what specific steps should he advocate?
Comment By Me, 11-08-06Spoken like a true democrat, Fletch. Those informed, educated people sitting in classrooms know how selfish, uneducated ranchers should run their life and their business better then those ranchers who are living it do.
ROFL!!! We now have two of those selfish and uneducated ranchers running our state. Good job!
"informed, educated people..."?
Like the ones you see on Jay Walking?
-Going to Idaho
Thanks Courtney for the updates. I'm watching Montana from DC right now and it's good to have the steady stream of on-the-ground news.
lisa
Yo "Me". Why don't you do a break down county by county of who voted for who. People with college degrees vs ranchers...... typical "us good them bad" GOP rantings.
Nice day out,
-Californiamontanacan
Lisa: thanks.
Don: Meagher County said they'd have results in by the afternoon.
Craig: Great question. I think we should all give that one a shot.
Interesting - my office neighbor across the hall has been giving me icy stares all morning. He hastily ripped his "friend of Conrad Burns" and Rehberg stickers off his car before arriving today. He's pissed.
I guess he's afraid I'll gloat on him.
(WHoo hoo!)
It is a good day, but I'm still troubled by the fact that Burns almost won. Really, people, what else would he have had to do to lose your vote? Isn't being delusional about Iraq, a liar, a crook, a racist, and an illiterate boob enough? Oh, wait, it's the Senate - chock full of delusional racist crooks and illiterate boobs. My bad...
Ha! Ha! You finally got me, but I milked your tax dollars for 18 years!!! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Comment By Californiamontanacan, 11-08-06Hey, Conrad would never use complete sentences, so stop trying to fool us.
-Californiamontanacan
Anyone have a website for all election results? Like all the sheriffs races, county commissioners etc in small counties (like Mar County)?
Comment By Courtney Lowery, 11-08-06Small Town:
The Secretary of State's office breaks down by county ballot:
http://sos.mt.gov/
Hope that helps!
I liked the comment about the Indian neighbor and working together. The wake up call should be for both parties and the American public. Stop badmouthing each other and start working to put our house in order. Don't sit back and gloat or rest on your laurels because no matter who won we are stll in trouble and we need to keep an eye on all the people we elected to make sure much of what has happened doen't happen again. If you think the scandels are all on the Republican side, think again. It just that some politicians are sneakier than others.
How about shaking hands and getting down to work to make our state a better place to live for EVERYONE? It might even work for the U.S. too.
Patti....your comment was nice to read, with an awareness of the importance of being open to seeing the good. thanks for your insights. pointing out burn's bringing home the bacon is the usual arguement for retaining connie. To grab some of those federal dollars to help maintain a state's services, etc. is all part of the job. which he did. which is what a senator is supposed to do. point being that he just did his job, along with being willfully ignorant of the needs of actual montanans, being openly racist (which gets tossed off with that good ole boy chuckle), and not being in touch with the potential of this state. along with being in cahoots with the neo-cons and the assault on our constitutional liberties, giving taxcuts to the rich so the middle class and working poor can fund the country. it seems the lack of heart award goes to conrad, as he almost pulled another one on us.
