The Associated Press is reporting today that an 11-year-old boy was attacked and killed by a black bear in Utah’s American Fork Canyon. The bear purportedly ripped through the family’s tent Sunday night, mauling and killing the young boy.
Several hours later, wildlife officers found the black bear near the family’s campsite and fatally shot the animal.
“Truly a tragic event. ... Events of this type are extremely rare in Utah,” Jim Karpowitz, director of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said at a news conference. “I know of no other fatalities by a black bear in Utah,” he said.
[End of article]The people KNEW the danger of invading a native wild species area. Was there food in the tent - what were the full circumstances?
I am so very sorry for the boy's death but am appalled the parents did not know better.
And, for the little five year old boy who has been taught that killing a baited and trapped wild animal is a badge of courage- why not teach him to revere, respect and acknowledge the wonders of nature. Shame on both sets of adults.
