Blacktail Mountain ski area opened in December of 1998 built on over 1000 acres of Flathead National Forest. On the west shore of Flathead Lake, the resort’s top elevation is 6700’ and overlooks Lakeside with views from Flathead Lake to Glacier National Park and of the Mission, Whitefish and Cabinet Ranges. Easy access is from Highway 93 turning west in Lakeside and following the Blacktail Road 14 miles to the mountaintop. Blacktail Mountain Ski Area is 45 minutes from Kalispell and two hours from Missoula.
In driving to the mountaintop, regardless of ability, everyone starts at the top on Blacktail Mountain. Two double chairs, a triple chair and handle tow access the mountain’s terrain.
North facing slopes are protected from prevailing winds and direct south sun keeping the snow light and dry. Seldom any fog and even on bad weather days, there is good visibility. Runs flow directly down fall lines utilizing the natural topography with few merging areas. Independence Terrain Park features different sizes and shapes of jumps, rails and boxes. Over 70 acres of gladed tree skiing is dropped into from the Thunderhead chair.
With excellent teaching terrain and certified instructors, the Snow Sports School creates a learning environment filled with fun, safety, and improvement. No matter what your age or ability instruction can help your skiing and snowboarding.
In its fourth year, the Fifth for Free Program continues to encourage 5th graders to enjoy a healthy and fun winter season through schools and with their families. Blacktail Mountain is a winter playground for the whole family.
Set atop Blacktail Mountain a beautiful three story lodge houses the ticket office, rental shop, Snow Sports School, retail store, cafeteria, and Muley’s full service restaurant and bar. Plenty of parking is available right out the front doors.
Blacktail Mountain welcomes all to enjoy winter and celebrate their 2007-2008 10th Anniversary Season.. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Open every day of the Christmas Season and in February for President’s Day. Powder Wednesdays have a regular following with people taking advantage of new snow accumulations for fresh tracks. With student ID college students ski and board at the half-day rate and on Thrifty Thursdays the adult full day ticket is only $25. Blacktail Mountain Ski Area is known for great uncrowded terrain, affordability and hometown feel.
