What’s In A Name: From Genteel to NASCAR

We’ve been tossing around baby names lately. Just like last time, we settled on a boy’s name pretty quickly. And just like last time, we can’t quite put our finger on a girl’s name. I like names that would sound good on an 80-year-old southern lady. Ada, Ruby, Ida, Adel. But I’m finding there is a fine line I don’t want to cross. Southern is one thing but I don’t want this baby’s name to sound, as I wrote to a friend the other day, like she lives in a house up on blocks in the Oklahoma panhandle. Genteel yes. NASCAR no. Ada yes. Delores no. This indecision on what to name the baby if it is a girl is the only thing that makes me think we may have a sister for Eliza floating around in my belly. Comment By victoria, 6-09-09raised a little girl, Miss Elizabeth and when she entered kindergarten her name was quite the talk among adults there. She introduced herself to her teacher by her name- Miss Elizabeth. Why, I don't think I'll ever forget the teachers face. The name, almost regal while lady like, stood the test of time. It wouldn't be long before most kids at school would call her that. As time went on she opted for the short version Lizzy. But that was reserved for only her very close near and dear friends. You may think it arrogant of her - there's more. My family has always called her Miss Elizabeth. Name was given by my dad who was born and raised in texas. He only knew her a few years before passing, but his memory lives on in the name of this little girl who he loved so very much. He knew his time as short and would not be here for her...but I think he is and now see's a women looking for the right person to take her hand - and loving every moment of it.
Thank you for letting me share this with you - I suppose the reason(s) for it are pure and simple - only you know what name is best - make the most of this - choose wisely and you too can see something that last and last....
