In case you’ve missed the thousands of Internet stories posted about Thomas Beatie of Bend, a local who was born female but is legally male, you can hear Beatie tell the tale Thursday on the Oprah Winfrey show.
The reason Oprah is bringing a guest from little-ol’ Bend to her show: Beatie is pregnant.
In a first-person account this month in The Advocate, a gay publication, Beatie said he legally changed his name and sex about 10 years ago. He underwent a double mastectomy and started testosterone injections, he said, but kept female reproductive organs.
After moving to Bend several years ago, Beatie said that he and his spouse decided to have a child.
Because his wife couldn’t conceive, Beatie told The Advocate he stopped taking testosterone to allow his menstrual cycle to resume, and became pregnant through artificial insemination.
Anyhow, Beatie will be on Oprah Thursday if you’re interested in hearing more.

Comment By Precious, 4-04-08Is this going to open a can of worms? Can he/she go on maturnity leave? will the insurance pay for it? etc....it will go on and on. what will the child call it?
Comment By Duran Bobb, 4-09-08People are talking about this like it's cute - and it's not. This is a woman, I wish people would stop referring to her as a "he".
What happened to the vote a few years back regarding same-sex marriages? This woman practically just grew hair and changed her name...declared herself a man - so that changes what she was born with?
Their marriage should be illegal. Because it's impossible for men to become pregnant, it only proves...this woman is still a woman. Therefore, her marriage to another woman would be illegal, not recognized, zip.
An operation doesn't change who you are. A man isn't just hair and muscle. A man is so much more than that, down to the core of his heart. A woman is a woman, down to her core.
"I want to be a man. No wait! Yes...no! I...wait, can I have a baby and still be a man?"
Stop calling her a man. She was, is, and always will be a woman.
I don't understand why it is so important for a gay couple (man/man) ( woman/woman) to have one in the relationship be the male of the couple and one be the female? Why not just find a real man and or a real woman for the situation?
