Nathan Small, wilderness activist and Las Cruces City Councilor, calls HR 6300 a “feel-good theater for the few” and once again cites that it is without precedent in a rebuttal to Jim Scarantino’s post supporting the proposal.
Small’s post asserts “truths” in an effort to set the record straight. The comments below the post are heated. The last comment by Scarantino promises another article addressing Small’s “truths.”
I have watched debates like the Doña Ana County Wilderness debate in churches, school boards, even over the spotted owl and logging. They are much more than debates over policy. People invest their time, energy, money and themselves in the outcome, thus perceived and real attacks have devastating power. Add in the emotional ties to land and the romance of wilderness, and the outcome becomes all-important and all consuming.
When the debate ends, the Organs will still stand, sentinels over the valley. When the debate ends, we still have to live together. When the debate ends, I hope we can all say we are proud of our conduct.

[End of article]I like your comment about hoping everyone in this debate can be proud of their behavior. However I think we are way, way beyond the point of return. Small and some of the other wilderness proponents (paid and otherwise) are quite willing to "stretch the truth", fabricate their so-called "facts" and lie if necessary. It appears that they are able to justify in their mind that whatever "means" they deem necessary to accomplish their desired "end". Their desired result is much more important, and the ethics of the steps they take to get to the end result are unimportant. At least that is sure the way it seems, based on their actions. It is hard to imagine how anyone could be proud of that kind of behavior. I guess that is just the way politics and our society operates today. I find it incredibly disheartening. I long for a place when things could be decided on facts and truth instead of who can buy the best media campaign and has the most charismatic appeal to the public.
