The Rocky Mountain News, the venerable Denver daily newspaper that has served Colorado for almost 150 years, has been put up for sale by its owner, E.W. Scripps. The company said the paper was expected to lose $15 million this year - a stark illustration of the dire financial circumstances facing many big metropolitan newspapers. This is a tremendous loss for Colorado, SE Wyoming, and the entire Mountain states region. And it appears inevitable the Rocky will die before the end of '09. Scripps followed the same road in the last year or so with the Albuquerque Tribune, and that paper went down fast with little interest in keeping it alive. Similar scenarios have occurred in past with other Scripps newspapers. It is a good bet that most newspapers will be gone by 2020, and in many cases , much sooner....
