Yes, folks, that gently jolting movement of your house this evening a little after 10:00 PM was indeed an earthquake. (As I said to my wife as it happened, I hope that's what it is, and not our house settling). According to KPAX, it was a 5.6, centered 20-odd miles north/northwest of Dillon, and thus far no reports of damage or injuries. Montana is actually a relatively active earthquake area but it's always a surprise to feel the earth move. That 5.6 was the most recent of 3 according the USGS. 1.2 by West Yellowstone and 2.0 outside of Alta, WY.

meshoula: Thanks for the links! What a weird feeling ... I would imagine this is somehow linked to Yellowstone getting ready to explode. I'm expecting lava coming through my windows any minute. That damn Discovery Channel
Comment By Scott Poniewaz, 7-25-05Much like Jonathan, I thought it was my older apartment complex foundation settling. My second thought was that the fault at the base of Mount Sentinel was waking up. If my Geology lab education from freshman year serves me right, the road on the UM campus running along the base of Sentinel is an ancient fault line.
Comment By hal herring, 7-26-05The reason it woke up Courtney's grandmother in GreatFalls is because it was strooong along the Front. This old building I was in was popping and shuddering.
It's the energy bill that is causing this! too late for tearful repentence, the earth has had enough. Expect hot lava.
If only it were that simple.
